I have a friend who wants to sell me the kit lens for EOS300D - Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. I am using an old EOS888 camera, can this lens be used for my camera or is only meant for Canon Digital SLR camera only? Thnxs!

Hi...the EF-S lens currently is only suitable for 300D and 20D becoz of its smaller image sensor on these 2 cameras...so it cannot be used for other EOS cameras....
So regardless old or new, digital or analogue SLR....onli 300D and 20D can use EF-S lens currently...
btw all EF Lens can be used for all EOS SLR which support the EF mounting...regardless digital or analogue...
U might wan to buy the lens from ur frenz only if u tink u might purchase a 300D or 20D in the near future..

its nothing to do with sensor size, its got to do with the rear of the lens protudes more and may/will hit the mirror of your non EFs camera bodies.

I nt sure abt tat protruding thing but from wat I know 20D and 300D's image sensor is not the full equipvalent 35mm frame so any EF-lens u used will have a 1.6 factor...for example, the angle of view on any EF lens will need to multiple 1.6..say if u got a 100mm lens..when used on 300D/20D the angle of view is similiar to 160mm and nt the actual 100mm's angle of view used on other EOS cams...tink tat why canon came out wif the EF-S lens to correct tis on the 300D and 20D...hope I am correct on these...pls correct me if I wrong...thks...

phyiscally what stops the EFs lens from being mounted into non EFs bodies is the extra rear element. the mirror will bumb into the lens.

if its the smaller sensor size, you just get a crop image, you still can use the lenses.

10D can use it too as long as you saw off the protruding part. 10D is also using a cropped sensor by the way. The EF-S is usable out-of-the-box on only 300D and 20D because of the mount, not really because of the sensor of these cameras. With some hacking (literally?) you can also use it on 10D.

EOS 888 is really lacking in features. I have one myself, and it doesn't even work well with lenses that are supposed to be compatible. In shutter priority mode (the only creative mode it has) it just refused to shoot at f/2.8 aperture (the lowest it would go is f/4.0) on my Sigma EX 24-70mm f/2.8 lens even though the lighting is really poor.

Anyway, good as a spare during desperate times.

This lens, there is a marketing move by canon to make new buyers of DSLR into the market, currently the cheapest canon wide angle lens to get a decent 28mm is the 17-40 L f4 lens which is over a thousand dollars. If you want ppls to buy a DSLR for under 2 thousand will any newbie spend that amount on lenses? not likely, so they have to create a 'CHEAP' Lens to get the decent wide and make ppl buy into the system.

once you play and learn more with, you may later get into the L lens 'trap' that you will pay for better optics or opt for other alternatives.

so canon decide to once and for all more more EFs lenses to market this group of ppl which own the 300D to

1)give them something to upgrade aka the 20D

2)give them a feature set like the 10-22 for true 16mm ultra wides.
and a 17-85 IS to give them a 28-135 5 times zoom with IS.

3)hopefully get more ppl to buy into the EFs lenses then......

4)BOOM cheap full frame DSLRs and the vicious cycle goes again.

Prime Camera at Peninsula will do a modification of the 18-55mm. Check with them about the $$$. Quite affordable cos after that, you can use the lens on all Canon EF cameras.
It's a pity canon has to resort to that, Nikon, Pentax & Minolta can use ALL their ols lenses (correct me if I'm wrong)

Still not all if I'm not wrong. Some cameras' mirrors will hit the rear element. Do a search on some threads here that talk about this problem. Can't remember which model has this limitation.
