Family of taxi-crash victim could claim up to $140k

Members of the public have been stepping up to offer monetary aid to Mr Mogan's family since Sunday, prompting the Changi Airport Group (CAG) to set up a donation collection system yesterday afternoon.

The public can drop off cash donations at a donation box at CAG's corporate reception, located at Level 2 of Terminal 2, said a CAG spokesman.

it's not murder... as nitewalk said

or possibly "Causing death by reckless or dangerous driving" under the Road Traffic Act

murder is when there is an intent to kill combined with carrying out that intent to its full extent... in this case, that guy was being reckless and inadvertently causing the death of a person through that recklessness... it's all stated in Singapore's Statutes under the Penal Act Chapter XVI "Offences Affecting the Human Body: Offences affecting life", which for the most part is based on Common Law... so, for "Causing death by rash or negligent act", at most the person would get "5 years, or with fine, or with both"... for "Causing death by reckless or dangerous driving", it's 5 years...

I'm no lawyer but the law could probably also throw in some or all of "Voluntarily causing hurt", "Theft of a motor vehicle", "Voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery", driving without valid license (assuming he has no driver's license), driving without 3rd party insurance coverage, etc...

[Digress from topic of this thread] We knowingly released a hit-and-run diplomat. As expected, the Rumanian courts played the game and went through the motions. Of course, they will conclude that they have insufficient evidence to convict. The Rumanian system will be willing to play along with Singapore's plea for justice for the next 50 years if we want to pursue the matter. The case will die a natural death when all get tired of it. He will get away scot free. Not even a fine.

The Romanian Court will find him guilty and sentence him to a long jail term to show Singapore and the world that they are a fair and responsible country, than the assh*le will submit a medical report saying that he's old and sick and the jail term will be suspended, also to show the world that they are responsible.

For this China guy, before the investigation even end already claim mental problem

I don't know, it seems that SG law favours FT or those who are rich enough to engage a expensive lawyer.

the Romanian incident is different as he was an embassy staff with a diplomatic passport... it is harder for Singapore to detain him unless his country decides to withdraw his diplomatic passport, which did not happen... Romania is part of the EU and they would have to explain to them if justice is not seen to be served... and the Romanian Chargé d'Affaires is not considered foreign talent or foreign worker; he is a Romanian civil servant, not an employee or entrepreneur of any organisation in Singapore...

was this claim by the perpetrator, by his lawyer, by the investigators, by the court... or was it an assumption by the journalist...

the Singapore justice system in this case acted within its system of laws, and this case would have been considered a rash act rather than murder or manslaughter by any international standards... please don't denigrate your own country's legal system without proper justification...

it's so unfair. this person's impulsive act killed someone. i wish the law could be amended to include caning at least. 2 years is a very short time and sends the wrong message to would-be perps. (doesn't that sound like a DPP line?)

Agreed. The judge that has to preside over the case needs to knoe what can and cannot be done according to the laws and statutes.

This is nothing like the courts in the old Chinese dynasties where anything goes.

Yes, you are absolutely right. My emotions got the better of me and I do apologise for that but I still feel the culprit was left off too lightly and a heavier sentence should be imposed regardless if whether he was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia in the past three months prior to the incident.
