Default 70-200 IS on 20D - Err 01

read that from dpreview that it's due to lens problem.

or is it 20D problem?

twice happen on event shoting, shot shot shot then Err01. have to take out clean clean and put it back, then ok. tested with one old lens and one new.

that's horrible when talk about the price of this lense allow such things happened.

help~!

Or there could be a problem with the IS module. Try shooting without the IS turned on to see whether do you get the same problem.

Canon will replace it if under warranty. I had similar problem on another lens with my 10D. Faulty contact, no big deal.

More than QC problem ... I also encounter that... they claim contact problem the first time round... the lens was sent to canon for 2 weeks and when return to me with nothing done... @%@#$%@# pissed.

The next time they did calibration/adjustment to it (forgot liao)... still same problem.

Send in again changed the IS module... so far 1 time Aperture 00... need to test it under "hot" weather condition, ie shooting in unshaded conditon on a sunny day to see the problem occuring more often... (have yet to put my lens thru this test yet)

But now warranty over... how if the thing happen again cuz it's random... was hoping to test on another body to see if it could be the cam problem.

My friend has a copy of this lens and I borrowed from him quite oftenly..

The exact same lens works fine on my old 300D body.. but once I have upgraded to 20D (firmware 1.0.5) , the err1 pop up quite a few times.

think might be the BG-E2 battery grip problem as mentioned in dpreview...

Now so far so good... but have yet to test it in the condition where it's most likely to happen.

It's not the faulty product... it's the Quality assurance that Canon AND the service center gives me.... going down during office hours for so many times... it very time and salary consuming.

The lens is well known for having this issue.

I have the same problem.. it happens every now and then, sometimes it occurs frequently, sometimes it dosn't.

You can tell it's about to happen when the aperture reads 00 when you're about to focus, I just switch off the camera, press the "unlock lens" button, twist out and twist back in..then switch it back on again.

For you it's not as much of a problem, with your super duper fast 20D start up time. But on my 300D it's a pain in the arse since restarting the camera means losing the photo moment

still it cost me a few pics!!! but I really have no prob with this lens on my old 300D. So I'm still not sure what is the root of the prob. my 20D body or the lens (maybe both?? )

but I'm still planning to get one hehe... its a very very sharp and versatile lens and I love the photos I have taken with it.

hope my personal copy dun give me such issues...

Maybe 20D just not so compatible with this IS.

When I first bought my 70-200mm IS lens it was problem free for the first 6 months on my D60. Then I started to face the same problem you described...it would come suddenly and I had to switch off the camera to reset it. I could not really find any reproduceable pattern...it was intermittent. I lived with that for another few months and just days before my warranty ran out I brought it to the Canon service centre. They replaced the IS module and I never had the problem since. I had since used the lens on 10D and 20D without any problem as well.

I am convinced that the problem is due more to the IS module than contact problem. (I read on DP Review that quite a few users of this lens faced the same problem and the cause was not contact problem.) Hope this helps.
