hmm flash depends on condition & not lens right? so if you have not enough light source, den you have to use flash, sometimes more than 1 flash for different setups.

What kind of photography ? If for scenery and landscape, no need.

Useful for macros (increase DOF), outdoor happy snaps (fill flash), indoor (supplemental lighting). I almost never take my camera out without bringing an external flash.

    Cheers,

greatly depends on what you want to take. flash is useful even under bright sunlight as a fill-in (if you don't carry reflectors with you). also, sometimes you want to get a greater depth of field indoors or out and may need external source of light.

If your subject is backlit, f2.8 won't help you, unless you want to intentionally blow-out the background. The purpose of fill flash is to help you maintain a balance of illumination between your subject and the background. With a flash, the need for a fast lens is less.
