I believe spyder is distributed by Cathay photo. You can check out their pricing and promotion here

I have chosen the pro model due to the pricing and also for the ambient light sensor.

    Hope this helps.

I bought the Spyder 4 Express (the most basic calibration tool). It cost me 175 bucks at Cathay Photo.. I think its ok for me as I just need the basic stuff.

There are 3 versions, Express, Elite and Pro. Just go to Spyder website and have a look and see which one you need.

Do you need the equipment to be connected at all times?

    thanks bro
i saw the express looks good. it can calibrate all my computers!!! but i don know is it worth getting the pro edition for the advance profile calibration.
express can calibrate multiple computers with 1 monitor.

I only have multi monitors when i am at work, and my job scope isn't photography... haha

I am using macbook pro.. so only 1 monitor, which is why i only buy express.

Once you use the sypder to calibrate, can keep already. I read somewhere you should calibrate once a while (maybe evey 3-6 mths?). Well, keep it well, because there is certainly good resale value for it!

its not about the number of monitors - unless u work in a room with controlled lighting ie - u have full control on the light it is important to have ambient light contorl

if ur gonna calibrate once and never calibrate again its better not to calibrate. monitors lose their calibration after a while. I do mine before i processes a new batch of pics just to ensure everything is in order

Is the cheapest version good enough for editing event photos?

I think it goes by how many monitors you want to calibrate and how you need to calibrate them. For me, I take mostly events and some walkabout shoots and have just 1 LCD monitor, so express works well for me. Only do basic editing too.

How often you think I should calibrate? I am thinking every 3-6 mths.

you need to calibrate more often if you have a monitor that is more than 2 years old. I have a dual-22" setup, one monitor is 3yrs old and the other is just 1yr... the 3yrs old panel shows obvious yellow tones and I am forced to calibrate every 2 weeks. The 1yr old panel does not show drastic color change even after a month.
