15-85 supercedes 17-85 in all aspects except price, so the latter is out.

    15-85
-ultra-wide to medium tele, good focal range
    -downside is the variable aperture
-from the 18-55, you are upgrading for the focal range

    17-55
    -fast and constant f2.8 aperture
-wide to short tele, downside is the limited focal range(when compared to 15-85)
-from the 18-55, you are upgrading for the fast aperture

decide what you want and your purchase decision will be clear.

For your type of photography I think generally shallow DOF would be a very nice thing to have, so I'd go with the 17-55. The 17-85/15-85 offer a wider focal range, but to be honest 85mm is not that much of a significant difference to warrant such high costs. Alternatively you can keep your 18-55 and get a 85/1.8 USM (I've used this lens before and the focus speed is really very fast), which gives you more range and also allow you to create photos with very shallow DOF. I doubt you will need wider than 18mm for your types of photography (at least, not very often), so yeah. If you happen to want a wider focal range then a dedicated UWA lens would be good. No point getting like 3mm wider for the price you pay.

For street shoots you may or may not want to go wider (personal preference), but most people start out with the standard kit lens range and move on from there. Ultra wide angle lenses are hard to control and you need to learn how to control and make use of its distortion characteristics properly from using your kit lens first, otherwise all your UWA shots will look horrible.

TL;DR: 17-55 or 85/1.8 USM is the way to go

i actually had the 17-55 + 85/f1.8 combo before. liked the focal length provided but not the IQ of the 85.

17-55 f/2.8 if u shoot at indoor or low light area more, but limited focal range. Great lens but most expensive among the 3.
15-85 if want a general walkabout, smaller size (compare to 17-55) lens. Had use in the night b4, although not that great but still acceptable to me. If for me, I will get this if I don't know what I will encounter and what I will be shooting.

18-55 is quite a reasonable gd kit lens for it price. What I don't like is the front rotate during focusing. Or can get some prime lens? Eg 50mm?
    Those just my view.

I'd go for the 17-55mm, simply because it is better. I'd save up if necessary.

    I have both 17-55 and 15-85.

17-55 beats the 15-85 hands down in terms of IQ and larger and constant max aperture.
15-85 has longer focal length and is cheaper.

either would be an excellent upgrade from 18-55 kit.

sorry, I've never used the 17-85 before.

Do a google search on the digital picture canon general purpose lens review, and click on the reviews of the respective lenses. Should be pretty useful.
