17-55 doesn't win over the 24-70L. they were predominantly made for different sensor formats. 17-55 is imo more appropriate here because of its more useable focal range when mounted on the 60D. of cause', ymmv.

sure you can use the 24-70L on the 60D, if the focal range works for you. however if the opposite is true, you'll not be getting your desired shots, much less compare the IQ between these 2 lenses, because there will be no photos from the 24-70L to begin with.

    buy both, no need headache.

fondle the 24-70L on one hand while using the 17-55 on the other.

Yeah build quality seems to be highlighted a lot in reviews, but if you are not a professional shooter and shoot only in Singapore I highly doubt you need very good build quality. It's nice to have, but not necessary IMO. Also, red ring is an excuse to charge you more. Sure, L lenses have better build, coatings, weather sealing etc, but there are non-L lenses that are also stellar performers (for instance the Canon 17-55).

I use the 17-55 on my 60d, in fact, this is my 2nd copy...
sold my system during cash strapped period and bought back same models of body/lens.

the efs17-55 is one of the most expensive efs lens made.
The IS and AF is relatively quiet and the pics are sharp..

only complaint I feel is the rendition of colours compared to other lenses...

any other 17-55 users feel the same? abt the colours?

No such thing as which win over which... as I have mentioned before, it all boils down to personal preferences... and yes, IS does help in many situation, but was it a must? to many, it is just a good to have. For the 24-70mm it is essentially a heavy lens, and that (as many reviews) had pointed out, added abit to the stability of the lens itself... plus as IS added abit more elements in the lens, it kind of reduce the sharpness of the lens (i think), and since 24-70mm lens is designed for optimal image performance, both Canon and Nikon deemed IS and VR not necessary in such a lens.

So which would you prefer? 17-55 or the 24-70?

Having borrowed a friend's 24-70 on a trip to Singapore, I find that 24mm on the 60D is not really wide enough for landscape shots. You don't get the sense of 'wideness' in your shot that you can get from say, 16mm.

However, I think the most important question to answer first is whether you will eventually upgrade to full frame. That would make the choice easier I think.

Get a proper mount on flash if you are concern with a lens aperture is large enough for night photography without tripod. I have yet to come across any lens good enough for night photography with the kind of quality expectation with recent high iso camera settings. Okay I do have high expectation when it comes to noise and color reproduction quality.

If you are doing night photography, it is either tripod or with flash aided.

How do you guys think an F/4 will perform for night photography? I heard that the 24-105 is sharper than the 24-70? But is F4 good enough for night photography?

Yes you are right, f4 is sharper but if you want it to be more sharp and super duper sharp, you must set it to f22 and hand held it because 24-105mm have IS.

depend how stable ur hand is. ur "night photography" is what kind of lighting condition? what do u really want to capture? scenery ? street shoot? even if with IS, if ur subject move a little, it will become motion blur..doesn't matter if with IS or no IS.

how well do u understand the basic?

Erm... This is interesting. Would you show us some examples that how you can produce sharp images at night using f22 and IS mode activated in handheld manner? I am not well versed in this aspect and would like your advice.

Street photography. Buildings in Vegas for example. Well-litted buildings. So how?

Frankly... I don't prefer any of the two... as I said before, I used my 70-200mm most of the time, the rest of the time, I use my 12-24mm... and I find that range more suitable for me.
