Default Nikon 10.5mm Fisheye vs. Samyang 8mm Fisheye

    Hi fellows CSers,

Am trying to play with some fisheye lens. Saw these 2 lens available for Nikon DX.

Just wonder if any fellow can share their experience of either or both of these lens.

    Appreciate much for input.

    Cheers

If you have the budget, i would definitely recommend the nikkor 10.5mm Fisheye, new or second hand. I use it almost everyday for work.

The sharpest of the 10.5mm is just amazing fir a fisheye lens.

I find the vignetting bearable, you almost do not need to correct for it, but you will need to correct for CA at the corners.

What is your usage for the fisheye lens?

Well, just wanna take pictures from other perspective. And i m taking picture underwater too, using fisheye for wide angle shot with P&S, and I like the output. So wanna try to use similar stuffs on land as well.
Any user using Samyang 8mm FE? Any input from those users please?

Don't know about the Samyang but the Nikkor 10.5mm is definitely a fun and good lens.

I have the Samyang (Opteka version). It suffers badly from the common missaligned focus problem. Infinity focus is at 1.5m. At any other setting, my pics are blurred. There is a relatively easy fix for this involving folding back the rubber on the lens barrel and adjusting 3 screws. If you could be bothered....Once this is done it's a good lens for the price. There's a lot of blogs on the net about this. How often will you use a fish eye?

I have 2 Samyang FE lenses.... One is sold by Rokinon, the second is by Pro Optek...Both are super...I shaved off the petals on the Pro Optek to use on my 5D FF camera ( Nik/eos adptr)...Its absolutely sharp...The Rokinon is equally sharp...I have never had any problems with any of the lenses by Samyang,,,By the day I have owned several FE...(Nikon 16 f2.8 AF...Nikon 16 f3.5 MF...Zenitar 16 f2.8 mf) I have never owned the Nikon 10.5 for comparison but I'm sure it is also sharp (and AF as well).

I think the question you should answer for your self is whether you can live with MF or not...If you need AF then go with the Nik 10.5....If you can deal with MF than get the Samyang and use the money you save for something else.

    Cheers

I use the Tokina 10-17mm FE for my UW shots. See one sample here.

Did not get the Nikkor 10.5mm due to me already having a port that fits the 10-17, no need for investment on new port.

There is CA around the edges, correctable in photoshop. Overall quite please with the lens - one of 3 non-Nikkors I own: Sigma 10-20, Tokina 10-17 and Tokina 400/5.6 MF.

Hi silence, can I know what and where is bns shop? I need to buy the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye lens asap for a photoshoot job next week. Is this the cheapest price it can go for a brand new? I've been calling different shops to ask a price for this and as of now the cheapest I know is Alan photo at funan they sell it for $1000 and they don't have stock currently.
That's why I was amazed that the price is only $750-800. Where is this bns shop please?

    Thanks.

I also thought of renting it but then I want to own my own fisheye lens because taking spherical panorama is really my hobby and interest. So I assume Silence is referring to a 2nd hand lens because $750 is too cheap for a brand new Nikkor 10.5mm lens.

Do you guys know any shop where I can buy this lens (brand new) for a reasonable price? Do you have any info how much really is the market price of this lens right now?

It's a 360 Virtual Tour Job by the way.
Is there any alternatives to the Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye where I can also just take 8 shots (6 around + 1 zenith + 1 nadir)
    I'm using a D90 and I want a full-frame fisheye lens not circular.

    Thanks.

Samyang good to get started but if you have tried it out either through renting one/ borrowing one, don't bother. Go straight for the 10.5.

I meant the 'buy and sell' sub-forum in Clubsnap. Got my copy for $750 from a very nice uncle... If you don't mind 2nd hand and have some patience hunting the page, you might get something from there... Good luck!

I almost got a copy of 10.5mm too, but at the end was seconds late and the lens was taken by another folk.
I did check around for price of new one. Around $1k for most of the shop.
Just wonder if anybody knows if it s cheaper in JB or KL?

If you are looking at BnS, might want to try your luck in 2nd hand shop. Some sell as low as $750.
