Default your experience ?

Is that all the photography shops, retailers tend to cheat when consumers do not know the thing?
3 of my friends (visitors from china ) had bought their cameras at 3 different places..
at chinatown, suntec city, lucky plaza respectively. and every of them got very old model at high price....

Just to ask from your exp, have you encounter any honest retailer in singapore ?? i think even harvey norman sales person tends to bla about the product. I was told one time canon S30 is a new product..

Rule # 2 : never buy things from those "big" electronic store. their ranting is very high, they are running powerful air-con, they need to pay the salesman commission. Hence, their prices are very high. Don't ask me which are the "big" electronic store, you can figure it yourself, it also not appreciate to mention it here, I don't want to be sued.

Rule #3: If you do not know the market rate check out the prices at "big" electronics store and bargin for a 10% - 15% discount from the "smaller" electronics store. Ensure you are getting the same standard items.

you should always try to hide the fact that you're a tourist

if they think you will be leaving the country soon, they would feel a greater urge to charge you exorbitant price!

by the time you realise, you'll either be leaving soon or back home far, far away!

well, do your homework, run around make notes and then approach the shops with confidence, walk out if they are charging to high, most of the times, those 'expensive' shops will try to retain you and offer lowering the prices.

Rule #4 - Always do your research. if you go in blur, you're liable to get 'conned'. if you know your stuff and show it, no one would mess with you... check out websites, local prices and what to expect. ignorance may be bliss but the knowledge that you got conned afterwards will be agony.

There ARE Ang Mohs who live in SG, right?
Just don't go in and let them know you're unfamiliar with the country, the prevailing market price, etc.

You're a tourist. You're UNFAMILIAR with the country. No offence but I think its extremely naive to think that you can convince those people you know something when you've only been in the country for 3 days. If it can be done, this thread wouldn't exist.

Do not confuse expats from tourists.

Btw, what happened to that blacklisting thingy that had sometime back? I thought that was a brilliant idea. List their names, print it out and give it out. I'm pretty sure people will appreciate the honesty up front instead of ending up in CASE. I say SHAME THEM!!

If you wan to lower ur chance of getting chop carrot, one of the way is to :

Know ur product well. Try to give ur price before they quote you.

When you quote ur price, most probably they will know that you have done some market survey and know the price well.

In these shops, the next thing to happen when you know your price is that, the item you want suddenly has "no stock". And then, the salesman will try to steer you into buying something which (hopefully) you are not familiar with (so that he can con you).
