Unhappy Overexpose problem in D70 SB800

I find that I have problem controlling the flash in SB800.

When my subject is not near, the exposure is ok. But when the subject is near, there is an overexposed white patch there.

I am using TTL.

1) So, this TTL mode is not automatically adjusted when the subject is near right? It has no notion of the DISTANCE?

2)Shld I use AA mode if I want the DISTANCE to take into account automatically?

3) If not possible, I will use -1 EV for flash compensation for near subject?

Thanks!

I find the SB800 is quite powerful even at the lowest flash setting especially if you increase the ISO and shoot with a wide open aperture. In those cases, using the diffusion dome will help. You can see the flash range on the flash LCD. Just make sure the subject is not closer than the minimum distance.

I am shooting event. thus, sometimes no time to look on looking at the LCD screen of the Flashunit.

I am using ISO 800, f5.6, 1/50 shutter and focal length usu. ranges from 24 to 50mm.

sometimes bcos of white paatches, i change to f7.1 but still white white...think bcos , u are right!, the min. distance....

so, if min. distance, i will have to -EV on the flash unit??

Why didn't you try 90 or turning it backwards?

Looking at my SB800 LCD display with an ISO 800 setting and f5.6. They flash range for 50mm is 2.0 - 20 metres whereas for 24 mm, it is 1.3 - 15 metres. If you put on the diffusion dome, it drops to 0.7-8.0 metres as it covers 14mm.

At the minimum flash distance, the flash power is already 1/128 of the full flash power. That is as low as it will go. Dialing negative flash compensation will not help.

Basically, with your set up, if your subject is going to be closer than 3 metres. Just slap on the diffusion dome.

so at near distance i will either use the diffusion dome or tilt it to 90 degree?

The SB-800 manual and LCD will tell you what the minimum working distance is for a given ISO, aperture and zoom setting. Anything closer than this minimum working distance, and your subject may be overexposed.

You don't have to, it's displayed on the LCD panel.
