Unhappy Infra-red Remote Control for D70

Anybody know where I can find the ML-L3 Infra-red Remote Control for D70 at the web stated price of $16... perhaps lower?

Cathay says they sell it at $16 but currently no stock, I went to Max Photo yesterday and the guy insisted it costs $36. Became rude when I told him Nikon website says $16 (WHich Is True)
Tried 3 Shops at Lucky plaza, same luck. all sell $30 and above.

There seem to be a shortage and I bought mine about 3 months ago and surprise...at Max Photo. I was attended to by a lady. Friendly. I paid $22.00 for mine. Did I bargain....yes and no. I told her that other shops are said to be selling it cheaper. (did not say $16.00..as some shop did quote higher but no stock)

Before I managed to track one down at Max Photo, I have walked alot of places for it. Max Photo was not even the place I thought I would find one but since I was at Centrepoint that day, I just walked in and ask for the fun of it. I was surprise to hear they did have one to sell me. Needless to say I bought it at their price. Why? How bad do you want it? Yes Nikon Website said it cost $16 but hey...at this time when it is hard to find one due to shortage..it is all about economics. Supply & Demand. How bad do you want one? I needed it bad enough to pay.If you want to get it at a better price, I guess you will have to wait it out.

BTW....$32?? Gee..what did you do? Walking in wear Rolex and in full executive suit? heheh....

Seems like it is almost not possible to get at $16 due to the shortage. So far have seen people paying in the region of $18 - $20 .. but the fact is, ML-L3 is nothing more then a remote control sending out a fixed IR signal: If you can get any programmable (better those with learning function) at cheaper rate, you can use it.

I remember a few years ago I bought a learning remote control (but can't find it again) that is credit card size and cost me $4.90. Just go to any meet-up and borrow someone's ML-L3 to learn it.

I using a zircon, cheap palm based pda phone .. but the range is short. ( around 20-30cm good enough for night scene and tripod shots).

What software are you using? I did a google on this and someone mentioned that any infra red software will do as long as it support Sanyo 0163 codes. Is that what you have?

I'm using NoviiRemote on palm.
I heard about the Sanyo code thingie (also JVC & Phillips), have tried with another universal remote controller with the sanyo codes that it supported, doesn't trigger my D70. So I gather a programmable (i.e. learning type) remote control is better.

If you have the OmniRemote software for Palm you can download the IR code to trigger the D70:

I've tried it and it works well as a shuttle release for minimizing camera shakes. Not sure about the range though.

I asked around.

Most shops selling it for $22 to $28.

Nothing near the $16 or $18 mentioned.

Guess we all have to wait.

Can the Siemens SX1 Phone be able to do the job after installing the software? Has anybody tried it?
