Default Noise with flash photography [D70]

Hi there,

Just had my D70 for a week. I'm using the 50mm/1.8 lens most of the time.
I notice that whenever I use the camera flash, the noise level can be quite significant even at ISO200. Strangely, the noise level is almost non-existent when an external flash is used.

My friend told me this is common even with dSLRs, therefore advisable to use external flash if possible.

Any similar experience? Will try to do a comparison test when I'm free.

Post some images for viewing? It's hard to see from reading.
