    Hi guys ,
Would like to ask if own a sigma 17-50 2.8 , do I still need the 50mm ? If the sigma do cover the 50mm in term of sharpness , iq etc I would sell my 50 mm to fund for other equipment.
Hope to receive suggestion from you guys .

I have the Siggy and a 50mm f1.4G. I hardly use the latter on my D7000 where I can easily bump ISO up to 1600.

If you are asking this question, means you havent acquired the knowledge to use primes yet. Might as well sell it away.

Ignore the snobbish and nasty things some people may say. If funds are limited, covering different focal lengths is a higher priority, I feel. Then get some fast lenses at what you feel are the critical focal lens that you usually work with. Zoom or prime, doesn't matter - eventually you will build up your tool kit, assuming your interest is sustained.

Keep an open mind and keep learning. Don't bother with the "pro" label. I drive and enjoy my car. But I am not a pro and so I don't drive my car like taxi drivers do.

    Keep snapping and be happy.

Can you explain what knowledge is required to use primes, and how that knowledge relates to the question?

If TS is asking a silly question I'd be one of the first to point it out, but this does not make sense to me.

    Hi MelodyMusic,

    It depends on you.

Some points you may wish to note:
-> 50mm f/1.8 is going to be smaller and lighter than the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8
-> 50mm f/1.8 still has a larger maximum aperture compared to the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8

If size and weight does not matter to you (i.e. you would be happy always using the 17-50mm f/2.8) and you think that you would never need an aperture faster than f/2.8 at 50mm, by all means, sell the 50mm.

If not, it is worth keeping the lens, as it doesn't cost much anyways.

I do shoot a lot with a 17-50/2.8 as this is a range I used quite often.
When I use a 50mm prime, it is because I want to have a thinner dof in the photo.
For example, shooting at 50mm and subject is 2 metres away; f1.8 dof range about 11cm and f2.8 is about 17cm.

I have both the 50mm and the 17-50.

In terms of sharpness . 50mm at 2.8 > 17-50 2.8. I highlighted before that the 17-50 is fairly soft wide open.
At F/4. 17-50 is comparable to the 50mm, but still not as good. But I enjoy the convenience of not needing to swap primes especially during events, outing and group shoots. I use primes mainly for studio photography now.

The reason I kept both is because the 50mm is only 200+ with little or no depreciation rate at least for the next 4-5 years. A used 50mm cost barely 230. So why not?

Question you have to ask yourself is actually very simple.

Do you need the wider aperture of F1.8? If you do, keep it. If you don't, sell it. No need to think so much.

I owe the Siggy 17-70 and a 50mm f1.8... use both of them pretty often. My point is... 50mm f1.8 is a faster lens, it had wider aperture and so sometime I need that shutter speed for some of my shots... and this is important, because my 17-70 would not give me that speed, unless I bump up my ISO, which I will if needs be... but if I can attain that same speed at a lower ISO (less noise), why not?

So it is actually a question that TS should ask him/herself, does he/she mind bumping up his/her ISO?
I am not a photographer, just someone who happened to have a couple of cameras.

This is actually a good point also.....Recently shot a night portrait and the pentagons (bokeh) are somehow quite obvious (and I didn't like it).

But back on TS's question, If I were given the choice above, I will sell the 50mm, cos after I got the 17-50, I've never touched the 50mm (till very recently when I forced myself to use it) That said, it depends alot of your shooting style/condition/locations etc. Also most lens are not sharp wide open, but stopped down, both lens can be very sharp. But the 50mm will give you 'pentagon' designed background blur when stopped down...

*Also, 50mm don't cost alot or sells for alot, if you regret after selling it, can always buy back *

How often you find yourself using the prime 50 F1.8?
    Do you need the F1.8?
    Think about it.
    If i were you. i will sell. becos i dont use 50mm much..and already had 17-50 F2.8. : )

Some sound advice have already been posted before me.

To your question, in short, yes.

personally, i won't mind the slightly-heavier 17-50mm lens or the f2.8 and will get rid of the 50mm that overlaps with the range my 17-50mm can cover.

the resale value of the 50mm is about $100+-.. imo, i feel that there isn't much things to buy with $100 unless u top up quite a substantial amount.. if u have not got a filter yet, might consider using the $100 to buy a good filter for your sigma 17-50mm with some cash to spare for a good meal..
