When I did my internship at a LJB aerospace company years ago, we are forced to work for up to 18 hours per day. No OT rate, $400++ per month.

$500 is still the standard rate for school interns. what are u expecting? 1k a mth? u are going there to learn and the $500 is considered an allowance. if u want to make money then find a job. not intern for someone.

Agreed, apprenticeship and internship is for one to gain OJT experience where the trainee get to learn from their senior colleagues what their textbooks doesn't teach. In an industry like mine, how an apprentice or intern performs may jolly well determine his or her potential future.

People tend to get confused between allowance and salary.

I ever experienced some apprentice or intern that went AWOL without a trace and decide to show up at work a fortnight later and pretend that nothing ever happen. Of course when we decide to terminate their apprenticeship or intership, they started to cry father, cry mother as they wouldn't be able to graduate from their course.

In reply to ninelives, I worked my ass off to get to where I am today
I've worked for free just to experience working on a shoot near professionals.

after this incident I've decided not to pay young interns ANY money anymore. I get paid to give talks.if kids wanna be around me and learn from me they will pay me school fees in the future .

wad? o.o tats a pretty ok and good schedule...

maybe be a little more stringent in choosing your interns. currently, i am under a 1 year photography mentoring program also, so thats my internships of sorts...

interns also can add a lot of value and new inputs to your work. something to think about.

for me, my feelings now? pretty stressed (its only 5 days), but i attribute it to fitting in and adapting. perhaps i'll be better off next week.
but for me, since i requested for the intern (it wasn't avaliable normally this period), i have a responsibility to see it through.

btw, i learned a lot in this 5 days. thats from just asking around and "interviewing" my colleagues and superiors.

Just a young kid. He might be immatured (or might say over-calculative). By pure chance he showed up, and had that kind of mindset. I'm sure there are other kids out there willing to go all out to learn

hmm...the no time talk.. is really pointless.. most full time jobs out there...requires you to work long hours..and leaves you little time for family/loves one. Thats why you have leave/off/PH days out.. Nowadays people cant take hardship.. asking them to do work is hard and the next thing they do is to ask for more pay and money.

But i somewhat agree on the allowance part.. yea understand its allowance not salary thats why its not alot. I had cousin doing internships.. some of them from poly and some from private Uni. Seems like the rate is about $500-800. Quite afew had the $500.. Bash me if you want..but IMO its really too low. I was a intern before ($500) and i can definitely feel their pain.

Do the maths. 1 month =4 weeks. 6 days work week. 8 hrs a day. With all these..true enough..an hour is only $2.6 there about.
An part timer working in the same place..doing the same thing as you (or lesser). Gets $6/Hr.
Now.. the $500 poor dude is being rip off totally. There is a reason why companies grab up interns very fast. But as an intern..got to do..no choice since its part of the course of study. I can only say..endure endure and endure. Its really living hell.

exactly.. and all they need to give you is $2.6 an hr. If ur given $500 a mth. And they know you cant say no..because if you dont take up..you cant graduate..

my case is slightly different. i already graduated from A lvls. i'm taking this up to really learn more about what the organisation and their people are doing, so its really personal development and interest.

also, i get to have opportunities to input into the existing system. most are already working adults, 30ish. having a young voice can add a slightly different dimension.

Cannot calculate that way. Going for internship is no different from attending a full-day course; you still need to take 3 meals per day and make your way to your class/ company. Also interns has very minimal contribution to a company; companies lose nothing if they take in zero interns... In fact we lose on resources and opportunity costs as it takes time and effort to train interns.

Not to sound like anti-internship but seriously internship should be treated as an opportunity to be involved in an actual company... Be a part of it and open your eyes for the world coming next, instead of a mean to earn quick bucks during study life.
