Default Where to buy well-priced video cams?

So far, everyone's been talking about digital and film cameras in Clubsnap. Anyone into digital video? Not me but a friend of mine wants to buy one but I have no idea which shop offers good price. Of cos can go to Harvey, Courts, Best but I'm sure they are selling them at standard price higher than certain shops. If Alan Photo/ Cathay/Fotoguide etc are popular shops to get camera stuffs at reasonable prices (not always I understand!), are there any for the digital video?

Also, I have heard (dunno how true as rumors can be dangerous) some prefer not to go for Sony video cams bcos the accessories (memories sticks, etc???) to get are exclusive to Sony and it's impossible to use 3rd party stuffs? Anyone kindly elaborate and advice?

Thanks so much!

Guess it depends on what you want. Sony has some cutting edge features, eg, holographic focusing in the dark, 1.5MP CCD, infolithium & superquick charge batteries. You would pay through your nose to be on the bleeding edge. But if you look at their mid-range, eg, TRV27 or even the PC101, there are not so bad. But they are things they can definitely do better across the board, eg, not having bottom loading, wider angle at the lowest end, more zoom, a zoom lever that isn't so twitchingly fast and faster lenses (Carl Zeiss and all, they are pretty limited indoors at f1.8).

On accessories every manufacturer would whack you on them, eg, I recently wanted to replace a simple plastic hood on my old Panny and they wanted >$35 for it! For MS & lenses, there are 3rd party options in Singapore. Except for batteries, I have come across 3rd party ones on overseas websites but haven't found any here.

AP is OK but do your homework first
