I use 28-70 f2.8, and 105 f2.8 macro. But I mainly use my macro to take really close-up shots of my children's faces. My avatar was shot with the macro lens.

Your 29-80 f2.8 should be fine.

50mm is a good start for portrait lens. 50mm/f1.8 is a low-cost, fast and sharp lens. tho u dun get the flexibility of zooming, the 50mm trains u to frame and compose the pic carefully b4 snapping.

alternatives i've seen dat are most commonly encountered during my shooting session with others are EF 28-70/f2.8, EF 24-70/f2.8, EF70-200/f4 and EF70-200/f2.8 and tamron 90mm/f2.8 for outdoors (among the canon users). came across my nikon frens who shot with 17-35mm, and 85mm too.

indoors, most of my kakis use either the 50mm, 85mm or 90mm primes, and the 24-70mm (jeff49er lah ). IMO, anything longer than 100mm might be too long for a studio setting, unless the studio is very big.
