Congrats..

How (or what) is the distance from lens surface to macro subject, say for 1:1 pic?

Has anyone used the teleprime AF Nikkor 180mm ED 2.8 as a macro lens previously? What is the result like?

I do use the 180 Nikkor ED AF-n as a macro lens, with kenko extension tubes (3 piece set 12/20/36).
Some pics :

Focus distance is abt 0.8 - 1m. I sometimes add in a 2x teleconverter (in addition to the 3X kenko tubes) to get bigger mag.

hehe, you have the same sort of setup as me, except that I use a Nikon PN-11 (52.5mm) extension tube instead of the Kenko tubes. I can also testify that it's a wonderful lens for insect macros, as you have quite a good working distance, and the Nikon 180/2.8 is an EXCELLENT lens.

Any difference b/w Kenko and PN-11? Shouldn't be as tubes perform simple mech extension, right? What did u pay for the PN-11?

Tks for sharing

Seems u r a macro-p veteran. Have you used flash on yr macro subjects to get greater DOF? Appreciate seeing such photos if you have.

Tks in advance.

As I do not have a PN-11 I may be incorrect at places.

PN-11 does not convey the electronic contacts and may/may not meter on some bodies. TTL flash may work...
PN-11 is a single tube, kenko has 3 so you can use it for lower mag
PN-11 has a great tripod socket.
Kenko 3 tubes when used together has some play in the mount !
Not sure if the PN-11 is still avaliable new..

I use flash most of the time, with f8 or f11 ISO 400.

correct on all counts. I got it second hand, but you can still buy it new. I use it on an F100 though, so the metering issue is moot, and since I MF all of my macro shots, the AF issue is moot too...

Anyway, you don't use flash to get more DOF, but you can use it to get usable photos which otherwise would require very long shutterspeeds...

Simply, the teleconverter will maintain full focus range on the lens, whilst magnifying the centre, resulting in greater magnifications (eg at 1:1 min focus distance, with a 2x will get 2:1 whilst maintaining the same working distance). Tubes allow closer focusing, but reduces the focus range of a lens, eg normally a lens will focus from inf to say 1.5m (180mm lens)... with total extension of 68mm, focusing gets down to 80cm to100cm (focal length remains).

Hope this does not confuse you.. any other better explainations?
