If the flange distance is different, all current K lenses cannot be used directly.

Likely. Maybe there's something in the specs that's missing. At first glance, it seems to target different segment, enthusiast rather than mass market. The weight and dimension can already be a turn off for many choosing a mirrorless. To replace the lower end pentax dslr like k-r and still have weathersealed high end like K5 while keeping current pentax dslr users happy?
    The K-r is 564g and 125x95x68mm dimension. 16mm longer and 9mm thicker.
Shall wait and see more specs.

Rumoured Pentax mirrorless: 121mm width, 79mm height, 59mm depth

    Fuji X100: 126 width, 74mm height x 54mm depth

but its abt the same size as the fuji X100...

yeah... not the best comparison since the X100 can't change lens.

lets compare with the recently announced X1Pro then.

    Pentax: 121mm width, 79mm height, 59mm depth

    Fuji: 139.5mm width x 81.8mm height x 42.6mm depth

the pentax is still thicker due to the k-mount flange distance of course. and i think a lot of current k-mount users don't mind the thickness if it can take k-mount lenses and retain all functionality.

its a worthwhile trade-off imo. i don't think i'll buy it cos i like my K5. but i can imagine that many new users may view the mount compatibility favorably - if the price is right, a lot of new users may start off with this new mirrorless camera and invest in k-mount lenses. as they grow in their hobby, they may want an OVF and upgrading to a pentax DSLR will still allow them to use the same lenses.

my preference has always been for a good-sized body that has good ergonomics. small for the sake of small (i.e. nex) is not to my taste.

small? Not with those native lenses. Very much small for smalls sake.
ATM, m4/3, V1/J1 is a better balance in overall size of system.
NEX's claim to fame amongst enthusiast is its peaking mode and short flange distance for non-native lenses (particularly M lenses).
Of course with laymen, it gives an impression that its small due to small body.

A K-mount mirrorless will do what its intended to be good at, working with k-mount lenses.
Size is fine, if one gets logical about it (its only the size of a MZ series camera and smaller than many RF cameras). More 'grippy' too, compared to smaller cameras.
With generally smaller Pentax lenses, the form factor will be 'just right'.

However, with layman initial impressions w/o handling the camera, it will loose out.
No brand; too "big" = lousy tech vs the competition.
A layman just won't see past the check boxes on the spec sheet and the size comparison of the competing camera
    'nex' to it.

IMHO, a bit of a disappointment that its still K-mount.
The daring thing would have been a shorter flange distance (with K-adapter support) to attract folks using other mount lenses.

Lets wait and see what more details on the camera will reveal.

It's not so straight forward IMHO. Having used m43 and NEX systems, if the lenses are not made for CDAF, AF will be painfully slow.

If a Kr got a K5 sensor and like performance, its already 'kick ass'
So this won't be any worse than that

Just can't see the logic of a mirrorless with K mount. Can't imagine what a dissaster it would have been if the NEX were to be A mount.

This is my concern with a k-mount mirrorless. Having all these great pancakes for k-mount might slowdown development of "CDAF-optimized" lenses.
    I wish that new DA40 2.8 is a DA24 2.0 instead.

the ability to mount k-mount lenses and retain full functionality might be appealing to some pple.

ultimately, its how well it handles and whether it allows users the versatility to take the pictures they want.

i'll reserve judgement and vote with my wallets when the time comes...

Hmm. Sony NEX 5N is not super small.. consider the kit lens with it. To me, it's a travel system, it's smaller and lighter than my K5. And I like it's focusing peak to play with my manual lens. But with the adapter and with longer lens, it become imbalance. I can't hold the camera for long due to grip. Although using it with the EVF helps, as it makes it me shoot like using with a OVF, i gain support to balance it off.

Agree with JK on this.. the grip of holding it with the lens makes a difference.

Although the rumor Pentax K-01 is bigger, with its intention of having k mount in may have pro and cons, for now, I won't rattle too much. When it is really out, it will be the "judgement" day for me to buy or not to buy, just like the Pentax Q, I choose NEX over it.

I only hope that the AF of Pentax would improve which is the most impt.

Would like to be enlightened too. Am very happy with my current K-mount lenses, and don't wish to buy new ones. Would be overjoyed to be able to use them natively on a smaller body though!

Simple. Just consider why NEX is a success.
