Satellite imagery from DigitalGlobe putting in perspective the physical scale of Costa Concordia in relation to the surroundings of Giglio Porto, Isola del Giglio (Full Resolution / Uncropped Photo Available Here).

“Vado a bordo, cazzo! (Get back on board, for ****’s sake!)” fever raging in Italy.

    Quote of the year 2012.

" I tripped and I ended up in one of the boats. That’s how I found myself there.”

Said the captain who escaped in a lifeboat before most of the passengers on his ship. He refused to go back even when ordered to, by the Coast Guard.

    From article by Herald Sun
Does mystery woman hold secret to doomed ship Costa Concordia? | Herald Sun

    Quote:
The Times, quoting leading Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, also reported investigators were focusing on a series of telephone calls made from the liner after it hit rocks last Friday night off the island of Giglio and before an evacuation was ordered almost an hour later.

Corriere della Sera said the investigators were trying to determine if company bosses were trying to avoid the "economic consequences" of an evacuation, which would entail an automatic compensation payment of €30 million ($38.8 million) for the 3000 passengers aboard.
    UnQuote

So if they had not taken 1 hour to decide and had evacuated the ship earlier, then no passenger or crew needed to die?

Similarly in our SMRT breakdown, the commuters were left inside the train for a long time, waiting for a decision whether to evacuate the trains. Luckily no fire broke out and no one shouted "Fire" when there was none, which would have caused a panic stampede and hundreds killed.

To give an idea of the size of the ship

16th body found. Previous bodies recovered are in an advanced state of decomposition, identification via DNA testing required.

Two dozen or so still classified as missing, possibility of unregistered stowaways onboard whose names are not in the official manifest.

Costa Allegra is currently adrift in the Indian Ocean with no electrical power whatsoever. 1049 souls on-board (alternate link).

BTW, who those interested. Costa Crociere's ultimate mega flagship "Costa Deliziosa" will be calling at the Port of Singapore next month from 2012-03-04 to 2012-03-07 as part of its 100-day round-the-world voyage.

The cruise passengers have such good life. Can enjoy expensive leisurely cruise for many days or weeks. There are still so many rich people in Europe. What financial crisis?

Costa Allegra with absolutely no electrical power, fresh food and fresh water is now being towed by the French fishing trawler "Trevignon" to Mahe, Republic of Seychelles after issuing a maritime mayday call, emergency supplies are also currently being airlifted onto Costa Allegra. The voyage is expected to take 72 hours (3 days / 2 nights).

Lifeboats can be seen in the deploy position with passengers sleeping on the Manat Deck due to a lack of air conditioning and ventilation in the cabins.

SCV- there is a National Geographic channel special 1 hour documentary about the Costa Concordia in March 2012.
Probably on 11 Mar 2012 - but need to double check that later.

World's largest Float-on / Float-off (Flo / Flo) semi-submersible Heavy Lift Vessel (HLV), the 275.00 meters MV Dockwise Vanguard (IMO 9618783) with 117,000 metric tons of possibility could be hauling MS Costa Concordia (IMO 9320544) ass off the shoreline of Isola del Giglio, Tuscany within the next quarter if one of the costliest marine salvage of all time goes according to schedule [01].

In what has since become the most complex and the costliest maritime salvage ever in recorded history, final phrase in the recovery of the MS Costa Concordia (IMO 9320544) is now set to begin 2 years, 6 months after it first began [01].
