Minolta SD 4

Hi guys. Newbie here and 1st post! Anyway, I am interested to get a scanner and I am eye-ing the Scan Dual 4. Just like to know how is the quality of the scanner. Also, I have read lots of horror stories that the scanner won't work even fresh out from the box. Any comments on this? I shoot mostly slides and some negs. Mostly Velvia 100F and Superia 400. Lanscapes, portraits and event shoot are my interests. Most of my prints are 8x12 by the way so I guess the SD4's resolution should be enough. I don't intend to spend that much on a scanner as I might be taking the D-SLR plunge in 2 to 3 years time. Oh by the way, the scanner will be used mostly on converting colour images into b/w and some minor colour/tone editing. Else, the colour trans / negs goes straight to the Noritsus for direct printing.
