Hi Ian, I've seldom seen pple fill the entire frame with a bird head, quite "strange" composition to me The first bird's eye is a little bit blur, was it because motion blur? I am learning how to stablize long focal lengh glass at the moment. Can share some experience?

Regards,
Tom

Tom I'd suggest you check your monitor for lack of sharpness. Grab the shot and enlarge it to 200% and you'll find the eye is razor sharp.

Long lens technique (in this case 800/5.6) requires excellent holding techniques and lots of practice. This shot was taken with a monopod.

i feel that its an unusual composition too, usually for wild birds, you want something in the environment/background that says 'wild bird' otherwise people will just assume its from the zoo/bird park etc.

fair enough comment, I should have posted a couple of others from the series that do show the birds in their environment, however they have already been sold and it would be a breach of contract for me to post them here.

.... (Birds in the Wild) as opposed to our shots of Birds in the Park/Zoo eh ...

Very nice shots - especially the backlit swan, which must have been a real bear to meter.

Not too sure about the sharpness of the pelican as was hinted at by Tom - need to view it on my PC at home to be 100% sure. But definitely an excellent shot.

Technically, I suppose these shots are good, and were hard to catch, but otherwise, they don't communicate anything to me. They are just heads of birds. Also a little too stark and frontal. Somehow they don't really bring out the beauty or personality of these birds.
