NikonRumor was spot-on with the D4... and they are very confident on the D800 - 36MP enlarged D7000 sensor. The reason is most probably the very reason you just mentioned.

sucks not many ppl need that high megapixel... D800 just use D3s 12 megapixel sensor and the latest Expeed 3 processor is enough to make many ppl go crazy..

Here and there, hints were dropped - "the D800 is not meant to be a successor to the D700"... probably Nikon didn't like the D700 cannabalizing the D3 market... so decided to end its lineage...

All I know right now is the D700 remains a great camera for events and weddings. D4 may be ISO king, but in the end, what is the ROI going to look like with such a huge purchase? Hobbyists have it a lot easier, since a lot of them do not think about ROI.

haha, yes, that's why I still love my D700. Cheap and great.
Those who intend to sell their D700 for D4 or D800 may need to reconsider again.

From my experience with camera bodies, 1 thing I learned is that specs are never important. Still have the end result photos.

The d3s is a fabulous camera. I am thinking of getting another d3s as a backup since I assume the price will drop.

Not to mention the longer times to download, copy files, the cost of more storage or new PC with USB 3.0 etc...

if thats so... one word WOW... lol....

NOPE, you see 1080p isn't anywhere close to 16mp if you were to say convert the quality of 1080p into Mp...

So, what you'll get is 1080p in all those crop modes, because within each sensor sectional crop are enough Mp to make up 1080p..

With the crop itself, you're loosing pixels, the sensor isn't organic it can't just tell all the pixels to run to the middle of the sensor and bunch up really tight.. So each time you go down in crop, the Mp goes down since you're calculating Mp when shooting pictures.

    Hope this helps,
    Adam

Haha! I like your avatar! Very much a caricature of you! Ahem...sorry... OT! Yes, a good headache to have - a constant reminder that one must not keep looking for the greener pasture when he or she is already on top of one... (we tend to take what we already have for granted)

Not to mention Play games aka Modern Warfare 3 and play mp3s.

Seriously, I only need the weight of the camera to be lighter and with great ISO.
