    I saw something similar in a novelty shop but instead of two handles, it actually have two "supporting columns" to a single handle holding up what seems like two separate "ribs" of canopy.

    quite a good point the whole thing about product design.

    does anyone actually find a spork useful?

    You could have given your umbrella to the guy for him to get "help" while you accompany the lady....
