It is totally understandable that the Mass Rapid Transit system will have technical issues from time to time despite the most thorough maintenance programs and inspection schedules as nothing is 100% fault proof but the way SMRT responded in the aftermath of such incidents leave much to be desired.

always complain slow, long, pack... now we have a partially down MRT

So everybody in deep ****... and frankly everybody is at fault. it is just who got the bigger share of the fault

    chicken and egg problem
How do "always complain slow, long, pack... " linked with a partially down MRT? Pls enlighten me.

Is a Technology Meltdown coming soon way before 21.12.2012? Or has the date been brought forward? I feel sorry for those in the MRT...

    it is like this

'"always complain slow, long, pack... " this lead to puppy to take action cos they afraid they piss the ppl off during GE. then the smrt management bite the bullet and increase freq, cut short waiting time, ease the loading.

won't this inevitably cause stress to the already fragile MRT?

back to the beginning, question is who bring in another millions of ppl into our country ? bursting our transportation network, housing, jobs,

Oic, you have a point there. However, it's true that the MRT trains are always packed during peak hours. I often had to miss a few trains before I could finally squeeze in.

I am always curious with regards to the alignment of the doors. We are now living in the era where technology is so advance. Times where trains are operated with little electronics are almost out of reach, especially in developed countries like us. Yet a simple alignment of the train against the door, which doesn't even need state of the art technology can't be devised properly? I can't help to feel disappointed with what SMRT is doing to improve its service.

Fully agree. I believe the crux of the issue is not how and why these machines breakdown. It is also a different problem to tackle, yet related, of how preventive actions should be taken.

First and foremost is how SMRT react to such situations and how are the staffs trained to react to such situations. Obviously there is no hard and fast rules to every single situation, but it is almost expected whatever backup systems we have, they will eventually failed due to lack of power. So how should SMRT react to such situations using the most rudimentary method? Obviously given the number of years SMRT have operated, the management should be looking at improving the way how things operate and getting better and also a bigger picture of what is a full scale evacuation plan. Making passengers get stuck in that kind of situation and lack of communication and lack of initiatives from the immediate staffs only means there are more to be desired from the organization.

I was told is has to do with the limitation of the signalling system which the Half-Height Platform Screen Doors (HHPSD) are integrated into, the tolerance whereby the HHPSD and train doors are exactly aligned with each other in a narrow margin of error are rather wide as the signalling system was not initially designed with such a specification of operating HHPSD in elevated stations in mind three decades ago. Other cases are due to inexperience train operators operating the train in manual mode.

The signalling system is currently being recoded.

Our MRT does show signs of aging and worse still neglect! I think it has all to do with SMRT's chasing profits and diversion of attention to speculation in properties. By comparison, the Shenzhen Metro looks and functions like a real 21st century system. Mind you, we always think China is a 3rd world country, that we always are teaching the Chinese how to do things right.

Mind you, all their above-ground stations have half-height sliding doors installed and functioning right from Day One when the lines were opened. Unlike our half-hearted jobs....we have only so few stations (comparatively) and yet it takes forever just to do this little job. Yet when it comes to raising fares, it took only two seconds.

Not that we do not have talented Singaporeans, but our govt chooses to place dubious characters in charge of these vital systems.

I figure that the angst and furor and uproar in these incidents are in a great part due to the indignation of the people. Here was the long-awaited God-send opportunity to get back at Big Transport, and Big Government. In a sense, here was that very special unique opportunity for the much aggrieved population to 'galvanise' their feelings and hit back at the powers that be.

If the government would stop blowing its own trumpets, stop declaring those whims-in-white to be high-fliers, stop paying themselves and those guys in big GLCs shameless grotesque amounts of money, I think Singaporeans will be more forgiving and take these incidents in stride. After all we are only humans.

But if these top guys up there want to portray themselves as some sort of super-beings, almost demi-god celestial creatures, then they should not blame us for complaining. "To those much is given, much is expected"

Also have to add, on sunny days, when riding the NSL, it will be warm enough that I start to sweat, even though I am in the shade. I thought they are quite stingy with the aircon. Once I transferred to circle line, no more sweating.

This might be a blessing in disguise for MRT riders in the north like me. Maybe they will solidify and bring forward plans for the Thomson line. As it is today, I can't wait to get off the NSL at Bishan and switch to the CCL whenever I can, even if it meant a longer ride.
