    Default Future sensors

    Hi all.

    I have a Canon 550D, a good camera. But I notice noise at ISO 1600.
    So, in about how many years, based on history, can ISO 3200 or 6400 be used without lots of noise?
    Something just a little better than current full frame cameras.

    About the same time I'm guessing compact cameras will have APS-C type performance.

    Anyway, with using about 4 stops higher shutter speed or smaller aperture, this will open up a whole new world for me.

    Or I'm completely wrong about everything?

    Actually some of the compact camera have APS-C sensor already (look to Sigma). It is not really a out of this world tech.

    As for ISO 1600 having noises... actually how much noise do you reckon is consider unacceptable to you? I shoot photos at ISO 3200 and ISO 5000, and still find it alright in smaller print, but I might have a low standard.
    I am not a photographer, just someone who happened to have a couple of cameras.

    Digic V is supposed to have 75% less noise than Digic IV (DIGIC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). This is likely due to more advanced noise-reduction algorithms... the fact that Digic V is a faster chip also helps. Noise reduction software (during PP) helps too, as they can utilize algorithms that take full advantage of your computers processing power, hence you may not need to wait for the faster chip.

    As for developing photos for 4R, I find the noise not-so-acceptable once I hit around ISO 3200. On the other hand, for publishing to say Facebook, seriously I find that even ISO6400 on Canon 550D has less noise than many of those camera-phone pictures.

    ...except that he is asking about SENSORS, and Digic is NOT the sensor. It's the JPEG processing engine. And so far it seems to use the usual "reduce noise at the cost of fine sharpness" technique.

    Digic forms part of the Sensor System. Talking about sensor alone does not make much sense.
    Hardware without software does not work in any system.

    Electric fans work just fine without software.

    You need to separate it though. Look at how many on Canon's cameras use the same sensor but have different output.

    Now look at Sony, Nikon and Pentax. Using the same sensor, but when shooting RAW, the difference is not caused by the sensor but by the AA filter.

    when the sensor gets so good at noise level one day, IS/VR will lose its importance.

    If we can guess that... we can guess the winning toto numbers.

    And the way people mesurebate all the time, they will be screaming for "noise free ISO 256,000!!!" and all that nonsense.

    Seems people really forgot about how grainy even ISO 400 was on film...

    you can't judge sensor performance based on years.

    you'll never know, if somehow, just 6 months down the road some manufacturer comes out with a sensor that produces perfectly clean images at ISO256,000

    Maybe in a few years the sensor can ensnare and trap wandering spirits ala ghostbusters.

    Camera is digital while the fan is not. We are advancing into digital technology since the advent of computers

    Why do you need to know this definitely?

    As someone said, if we know we will be able to strike 4D and I think that's a better place to put the skill.

    Sensor as well as the processor follows Moore's Law: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law

    So you can do some project... Something like one ISO better every 18 months.

    It is already on the market. Google "d3s high iso". Still very clean at iso5000 when properly exposed.
