He will be touched if he knows hip wife is doing so much researches to get him a camera. In fact, I would recommend a 60d or d7000 if budget permits.

I will not recommend both 600D and D5100... both are excellent camera, mind you... however, 600D had slow fps, although it had good movie mode, but the slow fps might be hindering for TS to take photos of children who can be very fast and active. For D5100, it lacked inbody motor, making some of the lenses in Nikon's arsenal not usable unless TS was to go without AF...

In actual fact I will recommend the D7000, 7D and 60D, however with the high prices of these models, I would get the Sony A65 which had excellent framerate, moderate cost, greate movie capability also... if chipped in some money, TS could get a A77. Note that both the A65 and A77 are a bit smaller and lighter than most other semi-pro model (not sure about Pentax's K-5 though) and A77 are weather sealed - 60D was not... and that might be important.

If you're gonna take pictures of your children, consider a Sony A33 or A55. You can get 10 frames per second, or 7 frames per second with full-speed autofocus even if you are using "Live view" - in other words, using the camera's screen to shoot instead of lifting the camera to your face (which usually distracts kids). On Nikon and Canon, you get slow FPS and slow or zero AF in liveview mode.

FYI, Sony makes the sensors for Nikon, so image quality is good too.

Do you have something to support your sweeping statement? We don't need the next episode of an endless (and pointless) brand war...

Total nonsense, many of the CS members (some being professionals) are using Sony for years and so far no problem (ask Kei and Rashae). They made good cameras and they provide their sensor for many other brands.

If your or your friends Sony camera was damaged, you might be getting a lemon, or it is user problem in the first place, if you do not owe or your friends do not owe a Sony, then why the sweeping statement?

LOL! That's the funniest thing I've heard. Though apparently you have zero experience with their cameras. And FYI, they outlast the canons and nikons even in harsh weather, and that's from my own experience and also luminous landscape.

Please lah. Stop posting stuff that just shows how little you know, or if you think you can judge their DSLRs by an experience you had with a TV.

FYI, My old Canon hi-fi speaker set died after 3 months. How?

My Sony 5n had a board failure in 1 month usage, but doesn't mean making a sweeping statement would help anyone here. One personal experience doesn't conclude a product or brand reliability.

What I could say... is that all camera brand made cameras that are build to last. My 1000D is with me for more than 1 year already, no problem at all... my 40D had metering issue, but is a second hand product and was already 2 years old or more. I know of a guy who had used his Sony cam for more than 2 years, and the camera is still going strong. He was always jokingly telling me that how he wished his Sony Cam would die, so he can buy a new one.

Well as you can see, all cameras even the entry levels one are built to last...

And to TS maybe you should try to ask your husband what he prefer? haha,

Just in case if you got him a N and he prefer C or the other way round, but in the end both are still very good cam =).. Good Luck!

Definitely a DSLR rather than a point and shoot. Reason being he wants to take pictures where you can have a sharp object amidst a blurry background ... don't know what you call that. Think he mentioned it might be something to do with apertures and whatever thingmajig.

Other brands ... briefly considered a Sony Nex 5 some time ago when it was first launched - great reviews plus very portable. At that price though I rather get a DSLR; I do believe that he will enjoy using one.

if he wants a semi pro one he jolly well go buy it himself.

Thanks folks. I've got the answer to my query now i.e. there is really little distinctive differences between both, at least to newbies like us. In that case I shall go with Nikon because erm ... Nikon sounds like a more serious brand.

Since you have pretty much ruled out going camera-shopping with your hubby, perhaps you can consider getting a camera which you would also be happy to use from time to time
There isn't much to separate the D5100 from the 600D in terms of real-world performance. If your hubby takes up photography more seriously, he can always choose to purchase another camera in the future. Keeping that in mind, it would be prudent to avoid overspending on the first camera purchase.

I would advise not going to places like Gain City to purchase, as prices are higher than at the preferred camera stores. The value of the freebies are usually inflated. Makes more sense to buy basic kit alone at cheapest possible price.
    Exploring! :)

If you want portability, quality and still retain a good amount of DOF control (ie. "subject with blurred background"), look at a m4/3 camera like the Olympus : EP3; EPL3; Panasonic : G3; GH2; GX1

Open up your options to include a Pentax Kr too.
It packs a good deal of features and is only about $600 body only.
This is the 1st Japanese SLR manufacturer and the first to use the pentaprism used on the SLR so its no 'unknown' brand.

    If its between D5100 or 600D;
    I'd suggest the 600D.
Performance is generally on par between the two, but at least with the 600D, there is no need to juggle with lenses with and without AF motor on lens.
The D5100 needs lenses that have a built in AF motor.
The minimum I would go for would be a Nikon D7000.

As suggest above, I think somehow finding out what your husband has in mind is the better idea.
No point being 'romantic' and getting something that does not satisfy anyone (eg. too expensive; too cheap; not what was on mind)
At the end, the shop is the one laughing all the way to the bank with your 'romantic' $$$.
    My few cents.
