Thread: Age restriction to modeling

    Default Age restriction to modeling

as i've been approached to do a model shoot on FB.

i posed a question to the photographer who asked, who then mentioned that there's nothing wrong with me as a "15 year old being a model"

    and the question is this:

is there a minimum age requirement to become a "model", as termed by the photographer?

If the girl is less than 18, I would insist on parental consent, and having a parent/guardian present during the shoot. Also no lingerie etc shoots. It's technically child porn.

    so.

some points pointed out. not sure if it's considered preying on young girls, but according to that "model manager"

    1) i'm under the age of 16, but i do not need parental consent as it's not a full time job
    2) i don't need to tell my parents
    3) i won't be asked to do bikini and lingerie shoots as the "manager" put it, "no point" i have an "angel face" and won't suit that genre

Well, singapore officially prohibits employing children under the age of 12.

But with the "reputation" photogs have around young, gullible girls, it's good to always be on the safe side.

It's ok for anybody of any age to be paid as a "model". If not, where do the babies and children in commercials(for baby shampoo and diapers) come from.

They are there with parental consent, and usually *brought* to the model/casting agencies by the parents, and the payment is to the parents as the children cannot be bound by a contract.

Yup. Rashkae brought up a very good point. The agencies obviously contractually bind the parents rather than the babies. According to Minor's Contract Act (Cap 389), the general rule is that contracts are not enforceable against minors.

However, as with typical law, there are always exceptions:
    - Where a minor has been supplied with necessaries (ie goods or services suitable for the maintenance of the station in life of the minor concerned), the minor must pay for them.
    - Contracts of service which are, on the whole, for the minor’s benefit (e.g. education contracts) are also valid.
    - The minor is also bound by certain types of contracts (ie contracts concerning land or shares in companies, partnership contracts and marriage settlements), unless the minor repudiates the contract before attaining majority at age 21 or within a reasonable time thereafter.

I'm inclined to think that based on the MCA, Kei may not be bound under contract without parent's approval. CS's rule is min. 16 years of age though.

Do note that the law (e.g. Unfair Contract Terms Act, Companies Act and Minor's Contract Act) can neutrelise any contract between any party.

Kei: If you so decide to shoot, can let us know? hehe
