Use 3D tracking in Continuous Servo Mode. Also set your AF to react in the shortest timing. If your background is uncluttered, and the scene is well lit, I believe it will helps a lot with your focusing.

Learn how to pan (if they're flying sideways to you).

Come on. Don't worry about shutter counts... trust me... you have more than enough juice.
I am not a photographer, just someone who happened to have a couple of cameras.

No one will be able to achieve that in a day or a week... so no worries. Hahahahaha. Anyway, I have been trying very hard... and had achieved a 9XXX shutter count! Yeah!

You can try pre-focusing and a faster shutter speed like 1/4000s.

Use continuous mode together with burst. Should have higher keep rate.

Like what some of the seniors have mentioned, try panning. It's a good technique.

i think it's hard to control where the birds are flying, so pan if possible, otherwise use ai servo to help with continuous focus.
setting the focal length and focus first will help you get a shot by camping, while using burst will help alot.

Manual focus. That is fastest !
