    Default Need help ! 600D or G3?

Hi everyone! Need some help from u experts over here. After doing much research I'm still unable to decide which camera to get. Considering between canon 600D and Panasonic G3. One is a dslr while the other is a micro 4/3. One heavy the other lighter. But comparing IQ wise, which is better? I intend to get a gd one and dun intend to change to another camera for the next few years I suppose. Am currently using a lx3 and I loved the quality of the pics, just that the zoom restriction is what I dislike about.

I intend to get it this week and have gotten quote from ms color. 600d is like $100 more than g3 and Both comes with dual kit lens.

So anyone can help me with this?

    Thanks!

600D. but why not check out the other brands while you're at it? some brands (i.e. Pentax, Sony) offer more modes and features for the same price or cheaper.

A77 or A65... both are excellent camera, semi-pro and not much heavier. They have excellent IQ, great ergonomic and juicy Carls Zeiss lens... plus both have much faster fps.

Also look at Pentax K-5... which had one of the best sensor around... and extremely good low light handling.

If you insisted on having Canon or Panasonic... both of them have their good and bad points. 600D (like you say, is heavier) it had an APS-C sensor, and can handle high ISO better. G3 is smaller and lighter... and is a mirrorless... its sensor is smaller and theoretically it don't handle high ISO image as well as an APS-C sensor.

Oh... btw... what is it that you wanna shoot most? Video, wildlife, sports, etc? By answering that, you would more or less know which camera to focus on... be sure to look into these:

    1) Ergonomic (button placement, menu user interface, grip design, etc)
    2) weigh (have a physical feel of the weigh)
    3) Accessories available (external flash, dedicated lenses for different purposes, wireless transmitter, remote control, etc)
    4) budget

I personally prefer a DSLR, but you need to ask yourself what are your requirements or priorities.

Is weight or size a big factor? If it's too heavy or large, you may choose to leave it at home most of the time, and that would be a waste.
Both your shortlisted cameras have larger sensors than the LX3, so theoretically image quality should improve. A lot of other factors come into play as well.

If you get a 600D with standard 18-55 lens, you don't get much more reach compared with LX3. But at least you have the option of switching lenses

Hi Method86, you might want to read Shahmatt's stickied thread How to choose a camera (the sensor format nethod)

Another thing you might want to consider before you get your camera would be the size - would size be a factor affecting your usage of the camera?

I suggest you really looking into Sony's A77 and A65. They are fast, responsive and take very impressive images... although there might be some light lost due to the nature of DSLT... but if you are not particular about that, then it is a no issue.

The G3 certainly has iso performance that is good enough for most needs. I have one and a K5.
Though the K5 is indeed better in low light performance, the G3 is no slouch.
Coupled with nice m4/3 primes which are fast and very usable from wide open and the 2x crop factor to give enough DOF, there is often little need to go to very high ISO.
I like the K5 for pure performance in a small package compared to all other DSLR in its class.
I prefer the G3 when I need an even smaller camera on days when photography is an afterthought (eg. out shopping; playground with kids, etc) while not giving up anything to image quality.

Look at a cheap, small and very well featured Pentax Kr as well. Smaller than most DSLRs in its class but as well if not better featured.

A short review of the G3 from me here:

As i dun intend to spend much on camera again, therefore im thinking of getting one that will most probably last me quite some time before i decide to upgrade to another camera of wat so its more practical to get 600D for this case instead of G3 right? If lets say i needa use it for taking pictures at concerts, events, celebrities etc? 600

You don't intend to spend more on a camera again but how about lenses and other accessories? Try to factor in the costs of those as well. For interchangeable lens systems, the lenses make more of a difference as compared to the body, so if you do not plan to spend on lenses as well, maybe there are better options out there for you.

if you're not intending to change the body soon, the 600D will wear you out soon enough.

if you're dead-set on Canon, and budget isn't an issue, then i would suggest the 7D.

but if you're open to other brands, the Nikon D7000 or Sony A77 would serve your purpose as well.

the 600D is too entry level, and if you're interested in taking up a notch, you'll find that the 600D won't be enough for you.

Then you should really look at semi-pro level ones if you really want to keep it for a loooooooong time and not itch too much when new body is out...for the price/performance, I will vote for Pentax K5

Since you are such supporter of Canon... might as well get the 5DmkII... you would not need to change body anytime soon... too expensive... get the 7D... or the 60D, it will last you quite a while.

But seriously... I think you should explore other cameras such as the Sony's A77 and A65...

Haha actually I'm more of a supporter of Panasonic than canon. Initially earlier this year I was thinking of getting 600D but due to no budget so I wait till now with a budget of 1300 to 1500, and with the introduction of G3 I was in a dilemma to choose between these 2 camera. Since both prices are so near. If I were to choose between these 2, m4/3 better or dslr better? Or actually both are almost the same?

M4/3 sensor is smaller as compared to Canon's APS-C sensor... thus it will not handle noise at high ISO as well as Canon's sensor. However after playing with my E-PL1 for sometime, I find that the noise control is pretty alright, right up to ISO 800, which is quite good already.

    Like I said before, headed down the shops and play around with the two cameras. See which one you like best in term of;

    1) Ergonomic (button placement, menu user interface, grip design, etc)
    2) weigh (have a physical feel of the weigh)
    3) Accessories available (external flash, dedicated lenses for different purposes, wireless transmitter, remote control, etc)
    4) budget
    5) size (smaller camera is easier to carry around, less bulky)

trust me... weigh can play quite a part here... especially when you are shooting for the entire day (I know... many times when I was lugging my 7D around for the entire day...I had wished that I have my E-PL1 with me instead).

(Edit: Did a short search in the internet and came up with this,

    http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Pa...solution.shtml

There is a short comparison of the G3 and 600D image... If you were to pixel peek, you will find that 600D's pic yield lesser noise and had captured more detail. But that is... if you are that particular on IQ. Basically... both had excellent image quality and both are pretty good.)

For me to choose though... if I didn't have my 7D and was new to the interchangeable lens system, if my choice of photography involve mostly brightly lit location (bright outdoors and very well lit indoor), I will definitely go with the G3... it give me the small size and weigh that I like so I can bring around whole day without feeling sore. If my choice would involve very low lit area, night shots, etc, I would go with a traditional DSLR... maybe 600D or 60D would be my choice... and if sports and actions is my choice of photography, I will forgo both G3 and 600D and go for either 60D, 7D or Sony's A77 (all of these have much faster frame rate).

So you see... it is up to you to choose and the type of photography you wanted to go into.
