Default Darn, it's the AF issue of the 7D again...

I thought everything was well and good after sending the 7D to CSC 2 weeks ago, until I had to do some extensive shooting over the weekend.

Quite a handful of the shots turned out to be front focused on my 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens, and I microadjusted it again.

I then went on to shoot about 200 more pics, and found that the focusing were inconsisitent.

Last nght, I decided to mount the lens on my tripod and shot many shots with a cable release, both with/without IS, with/without mirros lockup. To my horror, around 3-4/10 shots were out of focus. These were all single shot AF, with spot focus at the centre.

While shooting, I could sometimes hear the lens re-focusing itself. Then the shot would go out of focus. Why should it be when the camera mounted on the tripod didn't move at all?

So, I had to send it back to CSC again. This time ard, they told me it may take up to 8 days...I wonder if there are many more 7Ds facing the same problem.

It also seems that this troubl of mine resurface after I updated the firmware to 1.09.

You can ask for a replacement nicely

Some said removing both batteries and waiting for a while helps...

Well, I'll wait and see what the conclusion is...if it is the same issue when I get it back, then perhaps I'll ask.

Be a nasty customer and demand (nicely) for a replacement unit. Read alot of online issues regarding AF, but since you are using spot AF, there is virtually no room for mistake. Such fundamental problem cannot be tolerated when one spent such a sum on a DSLR.

And to think such issue plagued the 7D when i'm considering a 2nd cam. geez. Do share with any update on the situation. Hope they successfully repair your unit or give you a replacement unit at least

Bro my 7D and 17-55 also have AF issue, when on high speed and low speed shooting. nothing seems to be in focus.. BTW if I ask for a replacement, will it be a brand new unit? My camera less than 3 weeks only with shutter count of 800

Most likely but they need to make sure your camera is faulty and they don't know how to repair first.

now you see why its better to just wait for all the BUYBUYBUY people to go spend their money and be the guinea pigs to find all the problems...
the AF thing seems to be cropping up quite a bit, theres another thread of some guy also having a bit of a whinge about his with AF problems...

looks like it could be a design flaw or something more then anything, of all 3 7D's i've tried so far though theyve looked pretty good...
good luck with CSC...

btw is it just me or did no one bother to check their units when they bought them? to consumed with excitement of a new toy? ahah

Sad for you TS.....

Luckily I've always stick to the method of NOT BEING FIRST..... will wait till Canon comes out with a firmware or new batch of 7D..... then wait some more.

This is a common problem for many DSLR. Not too long ago, Fuji S5pro also had similar front focus issue which forced Fuji to do some recall overseas.

Yup, I wholeheartedly agree with you, but then, I'm a sucker for being an early adopter...

When it first came back to me from CSC, I was happy that the problem of back focusing was solved. But somehow, after updating to 1.09, I started to find the problem coming back with a vengence, this time worst than the one before : haphazard focusing.

The first shot is always the sharpest, but subsequent shots of nearly the same composition, will yield inconsistent focusing. Continuous shooting is not affected, since you only half press to focus just once.

Haha, at least I'm heartened to know that most of the 7Ds are alright. So far, CSC has been a wonderful experience for me, as the technician will always come out and explain things to me. This is not the 1st time I had focusing problems with camera or lenses, but cross my fingers, they always get resolved in the end.

Anyway, I'll await their news next week, and then decide the next course of action...maybe can persuade them to let me have a 5dMII with a small top up fee perhaps?

Sigh, I still want a crop body....and 7D is really a dream come true for crop body lovers

sorry bro the correct term is AF servo sensitivity page 209 of manual from slow to fast...

then I change Ai servo tracking method to continuous AF track priority page 210.

For me I fix my AF issue with this page... All the moving or stationary subjects are in focus in low speed and high speed shooting in all three AF modes *single *AI focus * AI servo...

Now I can shoot high/low speed with images in focus.... the tracking is

You can try play around with the settings here.. As I was lazy to read the manual and too busy working I didnt have time to explore the camera.....

There's always a risk of buying something when it's immediately out. Bugs are inevitable.

Hope you can get a new camera... I know how it feels for a new camera to go for so many * operations* why not ask them to change a new one for you??

Thanks. No operations yet la, so far just some electrical adjustments...I don't think that they'd exchange one new set for me, as they'd have to exhaust their options first.

That's the price I've got to pay for being an early adopter. I've gotten my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro from the day it got out. A faulty graphics chip has seen me changed the motherboard once and gotten 2 new LCD panels and 2 free batteries over the course of 2.5 yrs....good deal? :P

Bro, that's small price for Apple to pay. Your hourly rates quite high and precious one leh. All the time you spent travelling to Apple service centre...
