The last version was the AFnD, the version before was the AFd. There will be new examples out there and their price will vary a bit most likely. It's a good lens, but not as nice as the AFS version which has a far better lens hood and is much faster to focus and doesn't suffer from "focus hunting" issues as much as the AFnD version.

Think the N is there on the box. My box has the N on it. Could it be N for double ring while the single ring version is the AFD?

Omega, it's common knowledge, I got it when I picked up half a dozen AFnD lenses (it's on the effing box actually) When the AFD range was introduced (it was preceeded by the AF range) a cosmetic change (and on a few lenses some modification to the focusing speed by changing the gearing on the screw drive from memory) was performed several years later, hence the AFnD range, the "n" standing for NEW, a term Nikon has used from time to time in Camera bodies, most noteably in the FM2n (new).
I recall writing a pretty scathing piece about it in reply to some idiot here on CS about 5 years ago when I was moderating the Nikon Forum.
