Can't decide between 14-140mm and 45-200mm. The 14-140mm is expensive while the 45-200mm seems like value for money...

By the way, let's set a time limit for this poll. When the time comes, I will lock the thread... usually these things spin out of control, so the thread starter knows. OK?

I am torn between getting m4/3 zoom lens or buy an adapter and get regular 4/3 lens so that I can also get a 4/3 SLR to play.

Been thinking back and forth on this for the past month.

i suggest that you wait it out if you are not in a hurry for a telephoto lens. the 45-200's image quality seems to be lacking.

Olympus has committed to announce 2 zoom lenses for m4/3s so it will be best to hang on for now.

the regular 4/3s has really good zoom lenses but other than the ZD 40-150 mkII, the other telephoto zooms will not balance well when mounted on a m4/3's body.

Why don't you get a SLR rather than a 4/3 SLR...? If you already have a M4/3, and want better picture quality, get a regular DSLR, unless you don't mind the quality and prefer to share lenses. Your call..

BTW, I didn't add G1 and GH1 (Micro4/3 Cameras) in the Poll because there are only 15 slots available sorry G1 and GH1 users..

Thanks. What stop me from going into 4/3 lens is that the original objective of me getting the E-P1 was that I wanted something really portable, hence I sold my Nikon D40 and use the money to buy E-P1, but the 17mm pancake while it is great, I miss the ability to zoom in on my subject.

It will take me a while more before deciding. More m4/3 tele is good news.

I think the greatest advantage of using a prime lens is that it forces you to think before shooting. if there isn't anything on the market that suits you now save up the money 1st.

I've read comments and reviews that the 45-200mm isn't that sharp, do you have any comment on this lense, I am considering getting one too as the 14-140mm is rather expensive over $1k

I feel that the quality is acceptable considering it is just a kit lens with IS. It may not be as sharp as other higher quality lenses, but it does not have the higher quality prices either.

Since our micro 4/3 has a 2x crop factor, at 200mm is actually 400mm, which we will be very hard to handhold even with IS, please correct me if I am wrong.. 14-140mm range seems to cover the entire range which I often shoot, if not for the price.
should I sell off my 14-45mm and just get a 14-140mm or 14-45mm has its place along side 14-140mm?

I'm happy with my 14-45. I wanted to get the 14-140 as the all-in-one lens, but it is too expensive for me.

There are more Pana kit lens voted than Pana cams.
There are more Oly cams voted than Oly kit lens.

There is even a 45mm f2.8 owner already. And surprisingly a lot of 20mm f1.7 owners. I'm still waiting for that to be on 2nd hand market

Not for me, managed some decent shots (by my standards, which may not be acceptable to others) even from a moving bumpy car in semi-dark rainy conditions (at high ISO to close the aperture a bit)

The more I use the 14-45mm, the more impressed I am with it. Haven't used the 14-140mm but the former is a very lightweight travel lens for me which I find takes very good pictures. In fact been contemplating selling off the Oly 14-54Mk2 I own which I am not maximizing it's capabilities, coz the 14-45mm suits my purpose just fine.

I think there are a few reasons for the result you observed so far.
  • 1) EP-1 is in the market longer and captured most of the micro 4/3 enthusiast and a big group of retro cam lovers. I am also attracted by the solid body and looks of EP-1 but chose GF1 for the improve auto focus, lcd display and pop-up flash (never know when you need it), even when I bought a external flash.
  • 2) Plus in the list above, a big group of G1 and GH1 users are excluded due to the limited slot allowed in the selection.
  • 3) GF1 is out of stock in many stores, so even if you want to get one now, you still have to wait for the stock to come in.
