I need some advice on which external flash unit to get. I know there are so many to choose from, so let me narrow it down just a little bit.
1) To be used on a simple digicam for now (Needs bracket to mount). Later to be used with a 717. 2) Cable & shoe triggered. 3) Ability to mount diffusers & bounce cards. 4) Auto-power output sensor. 5) Entry-level ($100-250) 6) Tilt-able head. Preferably with swivel as well. 7) Mountable on a bracket (as mentioned in the first point) Any opinions on Sony's HVL-F1000? Anyway, it's not for myself, but a friend who is planning to upgrade to a 717 in a few months. Meanwhile, he'll use it on a P&S digicam. |

well, i've gathered that if you got a choice, don't get the f1000. check out the accessories list in the other thread.

Metz 32MZ-3 ($198)
Metz 44MZ-2 ($270 or thereabouts) Both can add on the coming SCA-3602M-II TTL adaptor for Sony cameras. |

The SCA adaptor would cost ~$100 more right?

I don't know how much it costs, but I think it's quite a good purchase, as it's the only flash that can/will support TTL for the 717. Anyway, you can change different SCA adaptors if you change your camera, so the investment will not be wasted.

yes it connects with a cable.. if you go metz's website you can see the adaptor for the 707 is the SCA3602M. drop them an email if you want more details.. they're quite friendly in answering questions.

Hi to all in club snap,
I am the "friend" that finkster has mentioned in this thread. I am very fresh in the field of photography, digital or film, despite owning the digicam for more than a year. so expect a little boy mentality when explaning the technical terms. I am currently using a Casio QV-2900UX camera w/o any shoe, hot or cold to mount flashes. My next intended purchase is the DSC-P717. I am thinking of getting a external flash then can be used on both the cameras. How's the SONY flash for the 717? is it capable of the above features mentioned in this thread? Metz website only indicated SCA adpators for 707, but not 717, will there be any? What about vivitar flashes? any recommedations? saw the 2000 and 2800, was wondering can use with 717 or not. |

Hi newuser, you mean Sony F717 right? Not P717. The F717 has a hot-shoe and can use any flash, just mount it on the hot shoe and fire it. I have both the Sony flash and also a Nissin flash. The Sony flash is more expensive and weak in power. The Nissin flash is much more powerful and also cheaper. You can also try the Metz and Vivitar ones, Metz is German brank so the price is much higher.

Reply from Metz on SCA-adaptors for the Sony 717:
"currently the adapter SCA3602 version M doesn't fit completely to a F717 so that they not can be used in program mode. But, an up-grade to version M2 (M1 doesn't exist) is in preparation and will be launched at the end of march approximately." |

Thanks for all the suggestions for the external flashes for the 717.
And to Astin: Yes, I meant the F717 not the P717, typo I guess. Pardon me for sounding a little stupid.... What's TTL? I have been reading this term in various posts and I can't help wondering what it is. The only "TTL" I know is related to electronics and circuits. And what's the purpose of the SCA adaptor, knowing the 717 will probably take in a metz flash or any hotshoe flash w/o problem, what functions does the SCA adaptor add? What if I don't get the SCA adaptor for 717? what am I missing? It's just because the SCA and the Metz flash, kind of test the limits of my budget. |
