Thumbs up MO for battery pack for flash power

I've been using the UnderDog & PocketDog flash batteries for the past three years & I think they have excellent performance & value for money.

The UnderDog batteries are basically 6 volt/1.3 Amp/hr lead-acid, rechargeable flash batteries that can be attached to the bottom of the cameras or motor drives tripod socket. The PocketDogs are slimmer & lighter as they come without the screw-mount & can be carried in your pocket.

The UnderDog weighs 350g, measures 9.5x5.8x3.4cm & the PocketDog is 310g & measures 9.6x5.8x2.6cm.

Using 400ASA film shooting at f8 indoors, one battery can last around 10-15 rolls easily with super fast recycle times.

These are just plain old lead acid batteries with no memory-effect & no fancy LEDs or power indicators but they do the job & are value-for-money IMHO.

Please note that the batteries don't come with cables to connect to your flash but you can buy & use Quantum Battery 1+ cables that correspond to your brand & model of flash which are available locally at shops like Fotoguide for around S$90. If you prefer the Short Leash cable (see bottom photo) that is of a shorter length & designed for use with the UnderDog attached to the base of your camera & to do away with an unnecessarily long & cumbersome cable length, then you can order it for US$55 directly from Jon Falk Lights.

You can buy just one battery & a charger but the batteries are also sold in a kit consisting of two batteries & a charger as it's recommended to have one in use & one as a spare. You'll also save US$5 if you order the kit.

Please see http://www.underdog-battery.com/product.htm for the full range of products & here for the US price list & order form http://www.underdog-battery.com/order.htm

(If you don't think they are as good as I find them, at least check out Jon Falk's website & read the FAQ & other stuff there, it's really funny. He's a real nice guy too, actually sent me a nice Christmas present after my last order. )

U guys can consider the Lumedyne series that I have been using for many many years now that is really good and may not be as expensive as this Underdog thing. Although I can't really remember what price i paid it for :P Go check with Cathay Photo.

That one should be for DSLR bodies + flash only.

Is the Lumedyne as compact as this? Anyone know how much it costs?

Well its not as compact, but that also means that the capacity is greater, ie more charges. Forgot costs how much liao but i think with charger n cable n everythign cost me abt 300+

OK, so it means about the same cost but less compact than the Under/PocketDogs but I think the Lumedynes have LEDs to show remaining charge levels right while the PD/UDs don't. I can usually tell that the charge level is dropping from the sound the flash makes when recycling which of course becomes slower also. Personally I prefer my equipment compact & light as possible, so my vote goes for the PocketDogs.

actaully Im not sure abt the lumedyne cost :P go check at ur cathay outlet. but like i said im sur ethe capacity is higher due to its bigger size....however it snot bigger by a lot cos its in a slim tower-like shape, as in not big n fat kind, but just perhaps longer. wont make much diff cos when u clip to ur belt whether long or short oso take hte same amt of belt space

I think when you add up the cost of the Lumedyne battery, charger & cable (I believe it can use Quantum 1+ cables too) comes up to about the same or more.

The PocketDog is the smallest & most compact flash battery pack around that I know of.
