Hi there, thought I might just post here for reference for fellow Clubsnappers..
I sent in my F80S for the "film leader opt out" firmware today, and I forgot to bring along my warranty card. So I was halfway on the train, and i just decided to go, since I thought that Nikon would have my particulars recorded in their database or something... When I went there, I was attended by this lady. So I told her that I wanted to "upgrade my firmware to allow film leader to be left out during rewinding". She gave me that blank stare, and I even had to write my instructions on a paper... So she went in, and moments later, she came out asking for my warranty card. I told her that I forgot to bring, and then I asked her whether she could actually retrive my particulars from the database using the camera serial #. She told me that they couldn't retrive the particulars, because in the first place, they didn't have one!! I was so shocked... Such a big company like Nikon doesn't even have a database of their consumers? Then what happens to all those warranty slips that we send in? All thrown into the dustbin? And to make matters worse, the lady didn't even have the slightest knowledge of cameras, she couldn't even distinguish between a F80D and F80S - she typed the product on my slip as "F80D"... I rectified her (just in case i receive a F80D back ), and she told me - "oh, got data back is F80D... " argh. Just nodded my head, and walked off. My camera's in now, and the situation is that I must produce my warranty card with the purchase receipt when I redeem my camera, or they'll charge me $36+ for the firmware. So guys, better keep your warranty cards in a very safe place... with your receipts of course. Once it's gone, no warranty for you. Last edited by SNAG; 8th August 2002 at 06:43 PM. |

Hi there.....
Let me share with you an experience i had for sending in photography stuff..... Well....most shops don't even write the date when you buy the camera nor chop their company stamp on their cards - leaving them blank and say that go ahead and wait till two to three weeks and may be months till you send in the warranty card. Even some people in CS tells you that the warranty card is not filed yet to lure buyer - in that case who will issue the official receipt??. You only have the receipt to proof your purchase - therefore, if your camera is damaged within 1 yr(normally) then you should not have any problem getting a repair for free and at the time you send in the camera to the repair center with your receipt - they will then write the date of purchase referencing from the date stated on the receipt. So in that case, it will be black and white on the warranty card for them to figure out the warranty validity. I was kind of lucky as one of the equipment i bought from one of the 2nd hand store here came with an unfilled card - then my camera had a problem - the 2nd hand shop owner was so kind to send in the camera for me.... and then i realize when i collect the camera....that he issued me a new receipt for the 2nd hand equipment and this automatically gives the "old" stuff a new year of warranty period - which i didn't expect. So the bottom line is............there seem to be an ill practice here for photography equipment - as some shops don't print the date or chop. nad here we all think we can stretch the life of the warranty........ Only shops like Harvey Norman, Courts, Best Denki......provide a proper warranty documentation i suppose...but their price is a little higher....some even provide extended warranty for some price... What do you think??.... Regards, me Last edited by sulhan; 8th August 2002 at 08:21 PM. |

But luckily, I managed to find it just now. But one thing that I can't really tolerate is that Nikon does not even have a proper customer database or somesort.. And that they don't even have CSOs who have at least some sort of knowledge on cameras and stuff.... I think anyone @ Clubsnap can easily take over their post.... ![]() |

I think one of the main reason is that most companies do not warrant you to present your proof of purchase when you send your product for servicing. Most of them only need you to bring along your warranty card - even though they state (on the card itself) that you need to present your proof of purchase. Companies that largely follow this practice would be Sony, Panasonic.... etc etc... One interesting point to note is with regards to Pioneer, they do not give a warranty card inside the product. They actually do this: they issue a application form inside the product, and it actually has a expiry date (for quite long, able to last till the dealer's turnover time) on it. So consumers will have less chance to stretch the warranty period... But all these methods are actually not foolproof. There are a whole myriad of excuses that a consumer can give, and these companies normally give the consumer the benefit of the doubt. |

I always make a trip to the Canon showroom at bukit merah after my visit to the Nikon showroom(within walking distance). The personnel at Canon seem more frenly and professional.
