Default Need some technical advise

My camera accidentally dropped from about 3ft height and the lens hit the ground first.
There's no visible damage on the camera and lens except for the broken filter.

Camera and lens works fine except that the focusing ring is a bit stiff.
Sent the lens to NSC for quote but it cost around 50% of a brand new lens to get it fixed.
Something like barrel has to be replaced.

My question is, will the AF-S motor gets damaged if I countinue to use the lens?

Thanks in advance

Thanks, but is there a cheaper option?

I still don't understand why it could damage the motor.
AF still works fine. Right on the dot but maybe a little bit slower

Unfortunately, mistakes in photography can be costly. It's worse is when it's not your fault (someone tripped your tripod or manufacturer's poor design and they don't want to own up) and it's still costly.

The motor was designed with a specific load in mind. Now the mechanism is jammed which means it would put additional load on the motor and that is not taken into account. Better to fix the barrel now or the additional loading on the motor will kill it in time to come.

Sorry, this maybe a bit out of topic

I'm in a difficult situation and my problem maybe related to this topic.

Someone passed me a lens (for repair) with a stiff focus and the zoom intermittently gets stuck in lower end.
After opening, I discovered that the damage was due to lens dropped.

I checked with the owner and he mentioned that it was dropped 6 months ago.
It was still working fine so he continued to use it extensively for around 6 months.
Until one day can't use the zoom.

Now, the owner claims that it was working when I got it and demands that he should get it in working condition.

I suspect that the motor is already weak (due to overstressed driving a stiff mechanism) when i got it.
Maybe someone ( besides lsisaxon) here who has a good knowledge of SWM or motors could share his views. Is it possible for a motor to die suddenly?

Honestly... Unless you have a contract with him... You can tell him that you did what you could, and it will be FOC for him, but the root issue was him dropping the lens. That's what caused the real damage, and it's NSC that needs to fix it.

dropped 2 of my lense by accident

70-300VR and 24-70

70-300 suffer from focus ring not responsive, AF and zoom ring still work. open lens up and found that a ring inside connecting the external focusing ring to the internal mechnisim was dislodge thus casuing the focusing ring to be unresponsive. prob was solved by pushing the ring backto the center. IMO the ring was like a clutch in a car, it connect the focusing ring to the internal focusing mechnisim, the AF motor drive the mechnism but once the focusing ring is moved, the clutch ring disengage the AF motor drive and allow the ring to focus. so IMO a stiff focus ring shouldnt affect the AF motor as the ring is seperated from the motor by the clutch ring. but true for only those lens with A/MF option on te lens.

24-70 suffer from jammed zoom ring, AF and focus ring work. any drop of the lens especially those heavier lens can easily result in minor dent into the barrel, the barrel assemble is a very precise mechnical piece, the zoom ring have to be a perfect round ring for the zoom to work smoothly, any knock that is strong enough to change the shape will caused the zoom to become stiff or even jam. The same can be said abt the focus ring for the higher end lense where by the focus ring are made of magnesium alloy same as the zoom ring and barrel body. (my 70-300 the focus ring is plastic)
