#No 1 to me is an award-winning shot, great capture. The flight stance of the eagle, the modern backdrop, it's way too majestic

thanks! the subject and the bkgrd building is still underexposed imo.

old birdies,
1) what metering(matrix, center & spot) and AF(single, dynamic area & auto area) mode should be used to capture these actions?
2) anyway to have the subject correctly exposed without the sky overexposed? nd filters?
3) stupid question, any minimum/recommended speed? is 1/250 on 'S' ok?
4) 'A' or 'S' to choose. If i choose 'S', scared that 'A' exceed f11 which is D300's diffraction limit. If i choose 'A', worried that 'S' go too low when the bkgrd is dark.
*the above questions are meant for the actions, not stationary subject.

me juz using a 70-200 without any extender yet and might be shooting ard marina bay for the pairs.

1) Spot metering always as you want to expose the bird proeperly and nothing else.
2) I do not bother anymore to shoot them with a Blown sky or from Underside as the picture will not turn out nice. Unless for Recording purpose or ID.
3) For eagles fishing you need at least 1/1600th to completely freeze the water. Of course you can shoot at SS slower than that like 1/800 which i have shot before when the lighting is bad, the water is already blured.
4) i always use A mode as it is the fastest. After using A mode for a long time you do know the Expected shutter speed at Current Lighting and ISO. I do not need to fear te shutter speed is slow. When the lighting gets difficult, i switch to Manual occassioanlly. Maunal is much slower so i do not recommend using that in action shots.

arigato gozaimas!

1) eh...moi dont have birding lens yet leh. the subject is small as view from my viewfinder, about the size as my focus indicator and is difficult to follow when the subject is flying.
2) dun get wat u mean though i guess that u are not shooting them with the sky as bkgrd.
3) hmm...will try that. need to check my exif again. i was twittering with the 'A', 'S', ISO, metering, AF & exposure compensation etc when shooting them, cos moi have no idea what to do when shooting a "small" subject and was not my purpose of shooting.
4) again to check my exif again. think that when i'm on 'S', i do compensation and when on 'A', revert back. Moi was still mind-fickling which i should choose during the capture.

There are 2 eagles living at that area.. they are staying at the ritz carlton roof.. cos its really high up i guess so no one disturb.. at around 3pm, they usually head towards esplanade side(river) for food.. just thought i can share some info for those who might wana recapture this moment.
pic btw.. very national geog. feeling

thanks! can still improve...
moi still dun have any of these filters/polarizers yet... and a longer lens definitely will help too.

hmm...not sure on this. but seem when the sun is setting(with it "golden rays"), the birds can be seen flying. this few days sky cloudy didnt see them; maybe they fly low and against the esplanade area's building make it difficult to spot.
