I have the ST-E2 and have used it a few times. It works as advertised. It can control multiple slave flashes, does pre-flash metering, and you can set the flash ratio between 2 channels (eg 30% power from channel A and 70% power from channel B). It also works as a nice focus assist illuminator if you need that.

The nice thing is that everything is automatic. You don't have to do any manual metering or exposure adjustments, because you can just set the mode you want (eg Av mode f4.0) and flash power and exposure will be automatically. No messing with trial shots.

Range is not a problem, because in reality, the battery powered flashes it triggers have limited range anyway. You're not going to be using battery powered flashes at long range. 10m is plenty of working space.
