Hi all, I am deciding between the LX 3 and the G1 to be my next camera as I want a upgrade.
I have been shooting for 4 years already and currently using Canon S3 IS for already 3 years. It had serve me well and I am sure it will continue to serve me well. But there are limitations to this camera. Namely, its low light capabilities is quite weak and the lens is not wide enough. Hence I want to upgrade to a newer cam. I am now deciding between the LX3 and the G1. Both are great cameras from what I see but each have their pros and cons according to my preference. If I were to buy the G1, I would most probably get the adapter for M-mount. They are as follow : G1 1) Crop factor of 2x ( which means if I really want wide angles, I really have to but really wide lens, but dun know got or not ?) 2) Micro four third system still quite new and the range of accessories is still quite limited now. what if one day the system go kapoo how ? 3) Haven really tried the M-mount lens yet. Dun know whether will get use to the manual focusing. ( anyone want to let me try ? )LX3 1) No viewfinder ! I still can't get over shooting all day without a viewfinder. I know there is a optional one but damme ex and it is only a fixed focal length one. As I like shooting street, a out stretch hand shooting on the street will really spoil my "stealth" sometimes. 2) Limited growing space. What I meant is that what if one day I need to shoot a lot of studio and events how ? The LX3 might not be able to keep up. I know I have seen the great studio and event shots from this little guy but they still unable to be as flexible as a DSLR system. ( note: I am not comparing with a DSLR but pointing out the limitations.) I have already given a thought through and I chose these 2 cameras because of it small size which allow me to go stealth easier. I have also tried the 2 cams and I think they are both great. I shoot mainly street, travel , people and sometimes events. But as mention, I also need to think about the future which I might shoot more events and try out other stuff. Maybe I should ditch both and go for a DSLR ! haha but no money ! And a DSLR is really going to induce the BBB virus but my wallet already malnutrition liao.... ![]() Anyone can give some advice ? Many thanks in advance......

Just some comments,
actually G1 is really priced too high which you could already get some decent DSLR for the same price. And I also do not find G1's size really having a real advantage over some DSLR which is slightly bigger only. Possibly you may want to wait for a while for some exciting launches coming in next few week and months. If you can't wait, I believe Olyumpus E-620 is value for money to have all the mid-range features in a small body. Some other models coming are, G1 upgrade (with video), EOS500D, D5000 and possibly some updates from Sony as well. So it's good to hang on for a while as these new models should come with better noise control, better liveview and with video too... |

Hi.. I think it's quite obvious, you should go for DSLR, the limitations u mentioned for S3 IS "Namely, its low light capabilities is quite weak and the lens is not wide enough." is not really solved in LX-3, and G1 should be the same. As for "..and I chose these 2 cameras because of it small size which allow me to go stealth easier" case, you could still use your S3 IS.

Secondly, the shutter sound of the DSLR is a bit noisy compared to LX3 or G1 although they are like music to my ears Well, lastly I have seen pics taken with LX3 in low light and they were But thanks for advices, I think I will hang for a while until I really kenna defeated by the BBB virus. Meanwhile, STOP POISONING ME ! haha ![]()

why not wait for Olympus's micro four thirds?should be coming real soon, anyway, when four thirds first came out, some people say it won't last either, and till today,6th year in the running,it's still around and catching up with it's competitors with the release of E-620

not really strange, the point of bigger sensor is higher resolution with lesser noise and i believe with wider dynamic range, but everywhere has to start right?Olympus believed that using the film lens on a sensor doesn't really bring out the full potential of digital photography, hence the Four Thirds research started and came up with E-1,like what I've said to some people I know who asked why I chose Olympus with poor noise control capabilites,is cause I don't mind the noise, technology is constantly improving and I believe Olympus and or Panasonic will do better with time, and when looking at film pics as compared,I'm already very happy that I have pretty good noise control at ISO 1600 as compared to film
Also, with smaller sensors,it is possible to make everything smaller, some people are more concerned with size, some are not so,like me,I can carry 1Ds Mk III or D3X or E-3 or A900,but because majority of people are pretty small in size, hence the need for smaller camera bodies or rather, the market for it,and IF i were to use a smaller body, the good thing is that I can last longer when hiking or shooting, bad thing is,might be too small to use comfortably

depends acutally,I find E-420 is already very small, about the same size, and with the micro four thirds,it's supposedly the size of a compact with quality of DSLRs and the ability to change lens, and well,I've said this before and I'll say this again,to each his own, there is no perfect in the world,I may like noise, you may not,I may like big cameras and heavy lenses, you may not, lol(and you doesn't refer to you twisted illusion,
)There's a camera for everyone, based on your life and your likes, that's why there are also range finders,MF,LF,Holga, polaroid etc, wouldn't you agree bro?
