There is no panorama software bundled with the F30 but that's not a problem as there are many powerful, easy to use and even free photostitching software available that would do the job beautifully.

For example, these 2 panorama were created from images taken just yesterday with my F30 using the powerful but free software, Autostitch which is available for downloading from here:

thanks for the info, tomcat, I've used canon powershot A700 and it has the stitch-assist feature used together with the bundled software to produce panorama photos.

but u're right about using freeware...this would produce panorama photos wider than the LX1's 28mm wide-angle.

I have the Canon Powershot S400 and the stitch-assist feature is a joke. The Kodak Easyshare 570 on the other hand is very impressive as it would join the images automatically in the camera and you can see the final result immediately. Wish more cameras include such a panorama feature.

The stitch assist in the Canon is to help you get the pictures needed for a pano stitch with the included software in the CD or other (more powerful?) programs to do it if you don't like the included software. It doesn't stitch it up in the camera for you. If your picture is already stitched up in the camera and you didn't like the effect, there's nothing you can do about it.

well, in a way, it's quite useful, in that u can see to the 'exact' start and end of each sequential pic. But then again, one can do it manually too w/o the s-a. It's actually rather small, in the A700...reduced to about 1/3 size of the lcd - wonder y canon wld do that.

Anyway we r totally OT...but in perspective, we r trying to negate the relevance of a wide-angle 28mm in LX1 by having the ability to do panorama.

The 28mm equiv. FOV for LX1 is only for the 16:9 format, which not many people realised. At the more familiar 4:3 format, it is no longer 28mm equiv.

now that's a big insider news! I always tot 28mm was applicable thruout!!!! that means that they actually used software to crop away the top/bottom and call it WA?!

The sensor for LX1 is 16:9.

For 3:2 and 4:3, the left/right are cropped away, thus no longer 28mm equiv. FOV at the widest.

They didn't crop it since the sensor was already 16:9. Therefore a regular non-WA lens will have more WA on such a sensor.

I must admit it's clever that Panasonic actually did such a thing(marketing-wise). The 16:9 aspect ratio attracts people, and the fact that with such a sensor the lens will 'automatically' become WA is another plus that will attract people. Smart hor.

OK, back to the main topic, if you are going to shoot some action shots, maybe at home or a volleyball game, and you take alot of photos of people indoors, then get the F30.

If you don't mind the price and don't really need to shoot indoors, then get the LX1.

By the way, the 1st panorama (Parliament House) was taken at ISO 800 by mistake. I had forgotten to change the setting.

I didn't use a tripod for these shots. Just pan the camera manually making sure that there was sufficient overlap between successive shots for the panorama software to work with.
