IR modified Canon

This may interest some Canon users.
Saw a IR picture posted, shot with a modified Canon 20D.
Look at the shooting data, ISO200, f/8, shutter speed 1/200sec.

Looks like he used a Cokin for the mod.

Yeh was also wondering at the 1/200 speed at f8 when I first saw it.
Looks like Canon is good for IR as well.

Hmm...unlikely to be a Cokin unless he used a Z007 or left the filter off entirely so that he can use different types of filters. The slight vignette around the corners and side seem to indicate that a filter of some sort was placed in front.

That's my photo that you're refer to
My 20D camera body was modified by Harlim, a friend in Fotografer.net who lives in Jakarta
I'm not sure what kind of IR filter he's using, but as far as I know it's not an ordinary photography filter

I'd better invite Harlim to see this thread...

Yes, I am aware that that is your photo. I started a link from you thread to this Sub-Forum because I was thinking that it would interest some of the IR/UV enthusiast here.

No offence, reference is still made to your thread.

It would be good for you to let Harlim know as many would be wondering what filter was used to modify your 20D

He helped me understand some technicalities of the various IR filters available in the market.

I have an IR modified Canon D60. This modification consisted of replacing the internal “hot mirror” (part #CY3-1392, which blocks IR light) with one that passes only IR light. The replacement mirror cost $95.00 USD (not installed, with installation the price is $350.00 USD). Once the camera is modified no external filters are necessary, and the camera shoots IR as fast as a normal picture (no long exposures required).

Once the mirror is installed some focus adjustments may be required (depending upon lenses used). I found a Canon D60 Service Manual with software on eBay; the software allows you to adjust (through a PC) all of the D60’s functions and settings! Thus, you can tune your D60 to any particular lens you desire.

Hi there,

This type of modification is permanent, which means next time, you can only do IR Photography with that camera.

There is a very good advantage for modifying the camera for IR is that you need not to use tripod to take IR photos as the shutter speed is much faster as compared to those using a screw-on type of IR filter which is within the range of 1/8 secs to 1~2 secs.

I have a modified Nikon D50 also. The mod is permanent - they installed the filter right in front of the sensor. It enables me to compose through viewfinder, but the downside is I have to make do with whatever filter installed, no experimenting with different brands of filters..

I use IR photography mainly because of the "thunderstorm" effect (jet-black sky in broad daylight) and for the reason that it gives punchier result for B/W photography. For this purpose, a filter in front of the sensor is fine by me, as long as I can utilize the fast shutter-speed to take human interest pics.

IR is the new B/W
