i encounter twice, not once but TWICE, i took out both my batteries, and when i reinserted the batteries, the camera ask me to key in the date & time again...
Just encounted this problem and found the cause.

The camera has some activity after the switch is flicked to off which makes the card activity LED turn on for a while. During this time if you take the batteries out, you will reset the clock in the body.

To avoid this, let the LED fade before taking out the batteries.
