Re: Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical Field Test
With the arrival of the PZD, seems the VC version price as dropped to around $700 new, with 1 year warranty. Good time to get and try.

Great price, that comes to around S$890 per piece. Any ideas how is there international warranty? Combine purchase should bring down shipping cost more.

270 / 18 = 15.
300 > 270.
So yes, 300 gets you further but by a bit only. Both almost the same reach at the far end.

Re: [Draft] Tamron AF 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD Aspherical Field Test
Has anyone tried putting the Tammy on the Nikon V1 + FT1? How's the IQ? All functions (AF, VR, metering) working?

Thks unclefai & Ortega for the reply but Tamron is 270/18=15x zoom whereas 300/70=4.28x zoom so is this calculation correct, thks

Yes but forget the x. It is meaningless marketing gimmick in the compact world. Basically it tells you the "range" of the lens - from what focal length to what. In the DSLR world, it hardly matter. Many in fact use prime lenses that have only one fixed focal length or just "1x".

Absolutely no issue. For the D3100, all AF-S lenses will work. But a earlier generation non AF-S lens will not autofocus on the D3100 because both the camera and the non AF-S lenses lack the motor. You can still use these older lenses - just no autofocus, must use manual focus.
Here's what someone snapped with that combo:

i second unclefai's reply
just look at the focal length in mm and forget about the X
as for lenses for your D3100, just as long as the lens has a AF-S motor it will work just fine on your camera

Actually, I kind of want to take back this statement about it being a "gimmick". In the compact world, you are stuck with one lens. So users tend to want to have a "do it all, from zero to infinity" lens. So they pay attention to the X-factor.
In the mirrorless or DSLR world, you can always change your lens. This freedom means that you can use the lens that best fit your need for the occasion. Hence no need to get hang up on the X factor. Generally speaking, a "jack of all trade" lens with a high X factor will compromise on image quality (IQ) for the convenience. I was like that when I started out on DSLR and I got the Tammy 18-270mm thinking that's all I need. Fortunately, it is a good lens but only ok-ish compared to the specialist lenses I later acquired. It is still my favourite lens and the one I use most - mainly because of the convenience. But I usually bring at least one more lens along (the 35mm DX f1.8 usually) - just in case I get stuck in a poor lighting situation. But if I know I am heading for an indoor event like a wedding, I would use my Siggy 17-50mm f2.8 instead with the 35mm and the 50mm f1.4G as backup (I don't like shooting with flash - unless really bo bian).
PS: Apologies for being OT.

if you want to not have to change lens then get the tamron, if you don't mind carrying one more lens then get the nikkor VR Version of the 70-300

I found a post in DP-Review that may challenge the supremacy of the newer PZD version over the original version particularly in the area of sharpness:
Tamron 18-270 VC - Which Version is Sharper?
