PENTAX K-01 - Prestigious International 2012 Product Design Award
Source:
PENTAX - Marc Newson-Designed PENTAX K-01 Interchangeable Lens Camera Selected For Prestigious International 2012 Product Design Award
Denver, CO (April 16, 2012) – PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION is pleased to announce that the PENTAX K-01 interchangeable lens camera (ILC), designed by world-renowned industrial designer Marc Newson and launched in March 2012, has been selected as a Product Design 2012 winner at this year’s prestigious red dot design awards in Germany.
Sponsored by the Nordrhein Westfalen Design Center in Germany, the red dot design awards are one of the world’s most prestigious design awards. Each year, products brought to market over the previous two years are judged on nine different design criteria, including degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, durability and ecological compatibility. The PENTAX K-01 was selected from more than 4,500 applicants from 58 countries as a Product Design winner in the "Entertainment Technology and Cameras" category.
The PENTAX K-01 is an interchangeable lens camera with super-high-resolution image quality supported by approximately 16.28 effective megapixels, a top sensitivity of ISO 25600, and full HD video recording capability. The clean, geometric Marc Newson-designed camera body signifies a bold move by PENTAX to create a high-quality camera within a truly original and innovative design. By incorporating the K-mount — a lens mount extremely popular from the days of film cameras -- this award-winning camera would be compatible with 25+ million PENTAX K-mount lenses spanning decades, assuring endless possibilities in visual expression and creativity.
I guess not just a few of us, many others like this cute little (well, kind of
) camera too

Have always like this camera. Love it with the XS lens ... Coupled with a wide enough lens, and a L-plate, and a pano-head, you can get quite a machine for Landscapes, and some streets.
Here's my favourite test scene ...
K-01 + 15mm, 3 vertical shot pano, heavily cropped on the top end of the sky to make a 3:2 image.

At it's current price point, it's hard to say No to Pentax-Ricoh!

with k-01 and 40xs..i can easily slip into any bag i carrying for the day..focusing is fast and accurate...with its current price..i would say its the best deal you could ever have..with regards to viewfinder..i realise tat i dun miss it at all..in fact..it look like a bigger size pns so definitely help during street shooting

I used to own a K-01 black silver, there was a firmware 1.01 update, anything new or improvement in AF?

I can't be sure since I only own it for a couple of weeks. AF in the low light isn't exceptional, particularly if back-lit subjects. Cannot lock focus 1st time, and usually after a few tries - so can be frustrating. In good light, it locks pretty quickly.
If you manage your expectations well, it's still a tool that's capable of lovely pictures.

Agree. When I had K-01, used manual focus peaking most of the time, with manual and new AF lens, takes skill of manual control, the photos with manual lens are good, sharper than those from Kr, i think mainly of higher 16MP but later I prefer AF so I sold away on CS.

Philip, I still use it in AF mode most of the time. Lowlight AF not as good doesn't mean don't AF. It just mean that during low light and in specific conditions, it's difficult. If you shoot all the time in low light, then this tool may not suit you.
I understand from most that the firmware 1.01 is god-sent for the k-01.
Anyways, I pretty low on my expectations with most of my cameras already 1/2 a feet into oblivion. K-01 is actually the newest tech I have.

Cheers to K-01 V1.01, if got chance would test the new firmware at outing. Ya, I thought K-01 was good for low light before I touch K5 and now K5IIs, both are on wish list, waiting to see what CES announcement are and ya MZ-1. Now stick to Q and Kr.

Jaiyen, you may want to watch the verticals? I think the building for Joo Chiat building is almost fish-eye! I think Simon can give you more advise for the 8-16.
Anyways, this one is a k-01 appreciation thread? or sort of lar, since there isn't one. Just keep posting.
