There is no best lens for weddings. Different situation you need different lenses. And you need different setups. But you should already know that, because you are a wedding photographer. If you don't, you shouldn't be shooting weddings.

Quick question - how many shots does your typical full charge last?

I seem to notice that my battery use for D600 goes pretty fast though. I don't use live view, and whether my lens had VR or not doesn't seem to make much of a difference. On average, 300 over shots

I do not own a D600 to be able to give you that info. But 300 sounds a little too low. Do you chimp a lot? On a D700 I am typically able to get around 1000 shots before I switch battery. Even on a Nikon V1 with the same battery as D600, I am able to squeeze more than 300 pictures out of one charge.

Maybe others can help you on this? Anyone?

I don't think for a non pro body I've ever managed to squeeze 1000 shots. The only body that was able to deliver me over 1k shot performance was the 1DX. I have 2 original brand new batteries on my D600 and I think the performance is really kind of poor. I think my short experience with the D700 and D800E was much better.

What I do with my cam is just the usual shutter release.. casual/leisure or portraits, no high speed burst and continuous AF and live view/video.


EDIT: takes out my D600 - 246 shots and 44% left.

"Chimp" means you keep looking at your images on the LCD after you shot them. For D700, if I chimp a lot I can still manage around 900-1000 pictures. If I chimp a lot less, like on a full day event/wedding shoot, I can easily get 1100-1200 shots per charge. I just read online that D600 is supposed to be giving you around 900 shots on average and most people seems to be able to attain that. Maybe you want to try these to reduce your power drain:

1. turn image preview off - so that the picture will not show after taking a picture. Only when you press "play" will you see the images.
2. set auto-meter off to a shorter duration.
3. if you are using any wireless card like eyefi or flash air. remove it and try again.
4. turn off VR of lenses and try for a while.
5. remember long exposures also suck battery life more.

I have no problems with my battery also. Never noticed how many shots per charge but easily 700 - 1k if no long exposure.

I always have plenty of juice left after very shoot

Yeah, V1 should be easily able to take 500 shots with EVF and live view and it has the same battery.

I haven't shot till empty on my D600 yet. But I'm sure 300 over shots is way too little.

On a typical off-day, I may clock 250-300 shots and it may or may not budge a bar.

if u keep ur batt in n store the cam for a low time, ur batt power will deplete too...

i tried this...

on a new fresh full charge and i squeeze in 1500 shots usin the interval shooting menu and it was firing at low continous shots.9 pics each time....

Are your batteries new? Have you charged or used them for a long while already? New batteries typically do not perform as well as frequently used ones (till down the road)

At 44% left, my EN-EL18 would have at least 800 shots done with chimping.

I took my D600 to Taiwan last Dec and the battery indicator only dropped one bar after 600 shots ... Are you shooting in very cold environment ?
