Re: Larger Format - non technical discussions - outings, chat etc
Since with the increasing interest in brass lens, I will take the chance to post a lens one of my friend is selling oversea. He (Charlie) is very helpful in a project I am on recently, so I guess it is right that I help him post this selling here and someone gets it. I also hope it lands on good hand of someone who understands it. (I cannot spare extra cash on this for quite a long time)
PM me if interested. I will also post it in B&S later on. (Just for the interested of the LF group, I post here first)
The lens is a Wollensak Verito 14 1/2" f/4 Diffused focus lens. Below is copy and paste of the lens detail from the PM he sent me.
First and foremost you will notice cosmetically the lens shows its age, it is not pristine clean. There are scrapes and scratches to the barrel etc.
The lenses could probably use a good cleaning.
There are a couple small air bubble like imperfections on both the front and rear lenses.
On both the front and rear lenses where the lens meets the barrel there are what looks like chips or separation marks, maybe about 1" long.
The studio shutter and aperture ring setting does not seem to work properly. I do not know what is wrong with it or if it can be fixed. The lens has been this way since before I purchased it and used it. I have used it by adjusting the aperture by the open/close lever for the shutter. It opens and closes the aperture but you cannot tell what f/stop you are using. I used it, got used to using it that way and it worked fine for me. The last picture is a plate I made with this lens as an example. For the money on a lens that covers 8x10 I think it is a pretty nice lens and open up wide gives a very soft portrait look, the more you stop it down, the sharper it gets.
Petty big as you can see the lens board that the lens is mounted to is a 7.5" lens board. The last photo is a wet plate taken using the lens. Vege bird is not responsible for anyone who felt the deep poison soaking into his bone.

This is a 8X10 lens. Those of us who use field will need a second tripod to support this lens.
For wet plate it is ok the shuttle is primitive. For film users this will an issue.

Those who uses FLange mounted lens and monorail camera knows very well how tightly secured FLange are on the rail.
If there is any issue, it will be that most press camera might not be able to support it as the bellow draw is quite far. I did not ask if the plate in the last photo is a 4x5 or 8x10 as he shoots both format plate.
Wootsk, how much are you looking at? Drop me a PM

For those using filed, the Dallmeyer has a lot of offerings. Details read Apung and Large Format threads.
Happy hunting. Don't spend too much money. Recession coming soon in June.

You are sending people wallet to grave with a Dallmeyer. A good operating condition Dallmeyer with the soft focus adjustment cost thousand of USD. If you are lucky, you might get a ugly looking steal from Evil Bay for 800USD.
I think I need to tell guys who jump into brass lens to understand not every Petzval are what you expect. The main reason why I sold my Lantern Petzval in the past is because it is soft. I understand that the soft portrait look is amazing. But too soft till you has very little practical usage is no good. A good Dallmeyer patent Petzval has a soft focus adjustment and those with great result can be a big hole in the pocket. If you are on budget, you can either choose to gamble for a Petzval or hope some guys don't understand the value and you won the bid in Evil Bay.
Sorry for the delay, Vege Bird till take flight now fast!!!

I disagree. There are many of them discussing this body that body, this lens and that lens. Involving thousands of dollars, on a consumer grade toy.
Just to realize, the equipment uses a baby mickey mouse sensor, a lens cropped to form image circle less than 1 inch (!), and everything can throw away after ONE year.
If you want to talk poison, that is REAL poison!

Well, yes and no. You can get some decent DARLOT HEMISPHERIQUE RAPIDE series for about 100-200 USD.
But the REAL issue is: how to mount a shuttle and get the optical axis aligned?
A copal 3 is not cheap and difficult to buy one.
Then, it is how to alight the optical center to the board and shuttle? One US Angmo recommended me a guy in BEDOK (!) to do this.
Ideally, the shuttle/iris should be at the middle between the two element meniscus.
It will be a very very tedeous process to align the front element and rear elements to get a sharp image.
If a SWIRL bokeh with Sharp, image, there is a cheap and proven solution in 120 film format.
SEAGULL 4B-1 shot wide open!
Petzval (and non-Petzval) swirl - a gallery on Flickr
I am contemplating to remove a Seagull 4B lens and mount on lens board. It will be complete with shuttle and iris.
But it is a 75mm lens. So need to add a X2 to make it 150mm.
Not sure it can cover 4X5, but surely will be very swirly outside the 6X6 image circle!
