cycling on Sg road is quite dangerous. Mainly, motorists here are always in a hurry. They tend to drive very near the cyclists when overtaking. In Malaysia, when a car overtakes a bicycle, they will not just zip pass him but drive away before getting back into the lane like overtaking any other vehicle.

Our road is also busy with heavy vehicles. Maybe we just have too much construction works going on everywhere. These heavy vehicles are not trained how to avoid cyclists. Just yesterday there is another fatal accident involving a lorry. Instead of advertising about joining the army or navy, those $ spend can be better used to educate drivers on how to drive safely on the road.

Just to share my experiences. Over the weekend, while driving i had 3 encounters of cyclists hazards. 2 of them riding against the flow of traffic on the road and 1 riding/speeding across the pedestrian crossings when the light is already red. So its also very tough to drive in Singapore. Too many corners to watch out.

Instead of advertising about joining the army or navy, those $ spend can be better used to educate drivers on how to drive safely on the road.

Sometimes I wonder how more education can you educate drivers on road safety. Behaviour and attitude is a tough nut to change. Maybe if vehicle users cycle on roads as well, they will have better appreciation of the real hazards from the other perspective. And this goes the same way for cyclists vice versa.

On the other hand cyclists should have the basic courtesy of using hand signals to signal changing / turning. The way I see it, a cyclist is an even more vulnerable version of a motorcyclist. Already a motorcyclist has to compulsory wear helmet, compulsory daytime lights, ability to signal to show left/right turns, but ? what about cyclists?

Safety goes both ways. Either party should never assume that the other party will be keeping a watch out for them.

Make all bus drivers and heavy vehicle drivers ride a bicycle while the bus drive pass them as part of their training before they are allow to take class 4 licence Let them feel it to appreciate better?

IMHO
The main issue is space. We have precious little of that. So if cyclists want to go onto the road, it's a matter of incidence and prevalence - epidemiology.
I.E. it's bound to happen, regardless of driver attention, skill etc.
The path is way too narrow at the side of the road. And for a pair of cyclist to take up one lane, that's selfish too, on a busy day.

But on weekends, off peak hours, let's try and share. Be patient. And we really need cycle paths that stretch 20 km or more, and have lanes for fast and slow cyclists.

Some qns in my mind, for the cycle path to be build. Confirm all cyclist will use it? Even park connect got bicycle path, i still see most of them use the pavement n lazy to cycle on bicycle lane. If cycle path on the road n without barriers, accident still can occurs n in the end, another rules? I sone time saw cyclist using road bike on pavement, wonder why?

This was a well-written and poignant letter, but in a space scare Singapore, we may not have the luxury of miles of cycle paths.

Even so, we should try and make some dedicated space for cycling..

Space being a premium, constructions islandwide having incur more costs, makes you wonder if authorites involved would even want to pick up the tabs for doing up cycling lanes.

Seemingly thankless job, generates no revenues unless ERP for cyclists.

My guess is he must have cycled over the wrong toes.

And when the 7 titles are passed to the runner ups, USADA should do rigorous examinations on them like what they did to Armstrong.

There are some nice long stretches of PCN. However, there are also stretches that are rubbish. Why I say rubbish.

1) There are some stretches found in housing estates that detour round every trees. I find it so stupid that I wondered who came up with the idea. It is fun to push baby prams around these trees but to cycle in a UUUUU manner is crazy.
2) The PCN sometimes makes you cycle on the left side of the road then cross at junction and then continue on the other side of the road and then cross at juncture and returned to the same side of the road. Ride, stop, ride, stop. Fun meh?
3) Some of the bicycle and pedestrian lanes are side by side and quite narrow so you have predestrians on the bicycle lanes and bicycle on pedestrian lane which again meant ride, stop, ride, stop.

I find these stretches of PCN to be a waste of money. Really, it is so much fun to cycle on long stretches of road than PCN.
