More Possibilities with X100 - strobing with high shutter speeds
If this has been discussed before, I am sorry for repeating. If not, I hope what I share would bring more joy and possibilities to X100 users.
After learning that the X100 uses leaf shutters, I went to investigate further. I remember the days I was shooting with leaf shutter cameras like the Hasselblads, Rolleis, etc. how they were above to sync flash way beyond the normal 1/250 sec. Syncing at higher speeds opened more possibilities for strobing and using flash outdoors to freeze action in bright daylight shooting conditions.
Those of you who are into strobing would know what I mean.
Here are some 'tests' I have conducted and am happy to share.
Test Set One.
I connected the Fujifilm EF-20 to my X100 hotshoe, set aperture to max f2.0, and started shooting a series of shots from 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, 1/2000, 1/4000.
Every single picture came through with the flash lighting the entire frame (no black strips, no black out areas). Wow! I am excited.
Test Set Two.
I connected a YongNuo RF-602 radio flash transmitter to the X100 hotshoe to fire a remote YongNuo 560 speedlight that is connected to a RF-602 receiver. It worked perfectly all the way with sync speeds from 1/125 through till 1/4000. Wow! Now I am doubly excited by the possibilities for creative strobing use.
For X100 users who do strobing, this is wonderful news.
For X100 users who do not know what strobing is, and wish to learn/experiment/explore, do let me know.
Perhaps we can start another Fujifilm X100 thread to discuss/share this wonderful possibility.
Cheers,
Freddie

Re: More Possibilities with X100 - strobing with high shutter speeds
Technically the leaf shutter has a max native sync speed of 1/1000 with any flash that can be triggered. Anything above that most likely is because of the "High speed sync" With the fuji flash that probably automatically kicks in. I have not used the fuji flash hence its only my speculation. I cant comment on the Yongnuo flash either. But i have used my x100 with the 580exII and 600ex-rt and they work well up to 1/1000.

The max sync speed also depends on the max power output of the flash and the flash to subject distance. Say if the flash needs to fire for 1/1000th sec to throw sufficient light on the subject, any sync speed higher than 1/1000th sec will lead to under-exposure.
Even w 1/1000th sync speeds, it still offers opportunities to freeze action shots using wide aperture and fast shutter speeds.
Perhaps we can start a X100 Strobist Interest Group?
Cheers! Carry on exploring...

Re: More Possibilities with X100 - strobing with high shutter speeds
bought EF-X20 last night immediately I learnt that this flash can be remotely trigger by X100 built in flash. look forward this week to try out.
I do have an external flash with remote trigger, but i find EF-X20 is small, cute, easy to handle especially on the dial to adjustment the exposure. mount on hot shoe, iTTL on X100 work out so well.

Re: More Possibilities with X100 - strobing with high shutter speeds
Hi everyone,
I googled fuji x100 and yongnuo, and have found this thread. I immediatly registered to clubsnap
What guys do you think about using the fuji x100 with the e-ttl version of yongnuo trigger (YN-622C) canon version + YN-568 EX (canon version as well) ?
This is because I am planning to use the trigger and flash with the Canon 60D later.
If anyone has a recommendation for me about which trigger is better, please let me know !
Thanks a lot in advance.

I can't wait to learn the full strobing potential of my X100 since i just got my yongnuo 560II flash. Maybe there should be a gathering or outing for us X100 users to learn and share from each other?
