I picked up a used XS-1 2 weeks ago. Put it through its paces and quite happy with the photos I got. The camera is DSLR-like super zoom so you get some familiar DSLR features and controls and of course a nice long single lens 24-624mm.

It uses a 2/3" (8.8 x 6.6 mm) sensor which is of course smaller than a typical DSLR APS-C sensor but that nice long zoom allows you interesting framing and cropping possibilities. A bigger sensor will ultimately mean an even bigger and heavier lens especially if you want to cover the same focal range.

The XS-1 simply allows me a nice wide to super tele zoom and I need carry no other lenses in my bag except maybe for my X100. The zoom opens to f2.8 up from 24mm up to about 50m and then it goes all the way up to 5.6 at its longest tele 624mm setting. And of course I am a big fan of Fujifilm color reproduction especially with skin tones. Fuji X series cameras are made in Japan and the high quality and good fit can be felt when you are holding the camera and adjusting the knobs and switches.

I took the camera out with my friend who brought his Canon 7D on outings. They are about the same size (maybe 600D is more closer in size to the XS-1) except that the 7D with a 18-200mm lens is much heavier. We shot lots of photos of plants, skies and people flying RC planes. Macros are easy with both cameras, normal shots also quite sharp and bright but its the long tele shot that my XS-1 sizzles as I can really pull in a large image with my long zoom. Some of the images were sharper on my friend's camera and at 200mm, both our cameras focus just as fast if you ask me.

All in all, I am quite happy with my camera. I am glad I did the upgrade from my HS20EXR to the XS-1.

I have X10 and realised that even with the 2/3" sensor, the pic turn out surprisingly good. that is why i am also considering XS1 for family travel purpose, since it covers from 24-624mm.

any pic sharing for reference ?

I've been considering this camera for days. From what I've seen, the biggest downside to this camera is the not-so-good lens. Otherwise, it is one of the best, if not the best, ultrazoom camera in the market.

Thanks, not what I meant...the model FF have is X-S1 ............not XS-1. It is part of FF's X series, not XS series.

Would love to post some photos taken by my Fuji X-S1 but I am not permitted to post attachments by Clubsnap.

Anyway a quick search on google should be able to find you some examples. Or else go check out the samples on dpreview.com. Alternatively pm me your email and I send the images to you directly. Have fun fellas.

Zeddy, I dont see anything wrong with the lens. Its got manual zoom and image stabilisation as far as I can tell. From the reviews, some users complained abt the slow auto focusing at full extent of the lens at 600mm or more. The alternative to this? A bigger heavier and for sure more expensive 600mm lens stuck to a DSLR and then see how fast it will focus or for that matter how fast and nimble you can move. You probably need a tripod just for the lens alone. And I am quite sure you wont be comfortable handholding this big heavy lens for any period of time.

If by chance, you are referring to the white orbs issue, that is something that got to do with the sensor that is in both this camera and the X10 and not the lens. So far I have not encounter it in my shots and furthermore Fuji has announced it will be replacing the affected cameras with new sensors that is supposed to eliminate the white orbs.

I was at the zoo some weeks back and there was a group of serious photographers with their 300-400 & 600mm prime lens attached to D3s, 5Ds and so on. They were all lugging a cabin bag each, tripod for the lens and all that other photography gear. A couple more were using Nikon J1 and V1 with long zoom lenses. Moving from enclosure to enclosure was a major event and involve some bit of organization amongst themselves. I didnt have a X-S1 then. I was shooting with my HS20EXR. I didnt even carry a tripod so some of my shots were naturally blurred. But I was able to get the cropping and framing that I wanted. In the end I got more photos than any of these guys and I thought I had more fun on that outing given the limitations of my gear while I understand that their pictures were more professionally taken and of higher resolution and probably noise free and all that but i was happy with what I shot that day.

The X-S1 is not a camera for everyone. Some will still insist on the performance and controls of a DSLR. Others will want to shoot with prime or shorter zoom. But if you intend to make do with just one lens in your bag, and you want a wide to super tele zoom with an acceptable size sensor then this is one of the top choice out there for now. My 2 cents.

Just sharing my take on the X-S1.

    1. Fixed Len - Depending on personal taste. But no lens change means no dust getting into the sensor (no cleaning)
    2. Zoom (equivalent to 24 - 624 mm) + digital zoom (52x)
    3. Super Macro mode (about 10-15cm close)
    4. Full resolution at 7fps (more then most DSLR)
    5. Auto focus speed. Quite comparable to DSLR because of no mirror

Hence, quite ok if we do not want a DSLR configuration/sets for travelling or we want to carry light weight.
    kindna like a Multi-Purpose Tool.

I was comparing X-S1 with FZ-150. In terms of optical quality, FZ-150 is much better (judging from the user image samples). Yes, FZ-150 has a smaller sensor so can't really compare directly. I would say X-S1 is almost a perfect camera. Maybe X-S2 will fix the slight flaw of the optics.

I just got e hs30 n must say that it was a joy to use at sungei buloh. Though e long end didn't produce excellent results, At least I just managed to get some close up of birds that would otherwise be impossible.

Don't be disheartened. My first outing with my HS20 to the zoom produced not too hot long end photos as well. Some shots I completely missed the subject as it had moved out of the frame altogether by the time the camera took the shot.

After I got to know the camera better, I was better prepared and my 2nd lot of photos at the zoo was more rewarding. I got those long end elusive shots after I know how the camera will behave and so on.

I agree. Realized that at lower shutter. After pressing e shutter i need to keep cam still a little longer to get sharper shots.

Metal body and rubber coating, I think X-S1 is slightly weather shield (look at the rain drop) and fully snake shield One image to share, we caught a sea snake from Apr’2012 JBOG (JB outing group) at Parit Jawa jetty, Muar.

one thing i dislike though is that AA batt cannot be used for its power, unlike HS20

Pretty versatile cam for lazy bums like me. Makes a good travel cam too. Some test shots (colors edited a little but no cropping execept the first one to make it square format)
