Poll: Will you get a grip for your new OM-D E-M5?
Will you be getting the grip for the new Olympus camera? At a listed preorder price of $299 USD at Amazon, it certainly is steep... (more ex than the VF-2!)

I will but I prefer Olympus to provide 2 options, one for the grip only without the vertical section and one as a set for both.
Home is where the heart is.

I read that Olympus UK throws in the grip if you pre-order... wonder if the local Olympus would do that...

Re: Poll: Will you get a grip for your new OM-D E-M5?
the whole idea of m43 is to have a compact camera with 'dslr like' quality.
with the grip the size becomes huge like a entry level dslr, hence i will rather get a dslr if i were to get the grip for m43.
ofcourse there are people here who wants to grip incase they really need it for some occasion. but definitely not for me as it kills the look of this beatiful camera and defeat the purpose of m43.

The grip makes it look more like a "Flatten DSLR"...

I do not plan to get it. Not bec of price but bec i value compactness and shooting portraits is not reason enuff to get the battery grip. I have the E5 grip, and I hardly use it and I find it is something I can do without. I voted yes because your poll was not open-ended and associated a "no" answer to the price. So between the 2 options, I chose the option which I disagreed less with which is YES.

I'll get it just to troll other DSLR users.

I think the grip makes it easier to handle if you have the longer lens. Anyway, hope they throw it in for free for pre-orders. Olympus club seems to be very silent on this new release....

LOL
I'm still in the middle of the road, but currently I cannot foresee a real need for it.. probably when i get to see/use and buy long tele lenses which would have handling problems with the small body. based on the vids it looks like even with the grip its only slightly larger than my hand and still very much small. DPR did say using the grips actually got in the way of reaching for some function buttons.

Will get it only if there is a good PWP offer. Otherwise will try out the camera without it first.

The OM-D does not look like the smooth darth vader helmet like lumps of the canikony stuff. It is angular like the Lamborghini Countach with scoops, air intakes, spoilers etc. Olympus has shifted the paradigm once again. Fitted with the Grip set, it is going to have more buttons and dials then the cockpit of the space shuttle. It just looks so technical, I love it.
Just like my OM series with the motor drives. Dont get me wrong I also have the canons and nikons but the look with grip just shouts Man Toy. My models will be really scared, they wont even touch it. hehe. I love my Ep2 Pen, because I also has the old Olympus half-frame Pens. I will keep my Ep2 with a small Fujinon C-mount lens as my portable setup and use the OM-D with my Voigt 25mm Nokton to intimidate and get a response from the girls.
Having said that, the Ep2 with a dinky tiny c-mount lens can produce wonderful portraits. Visit my set but be warned 18yrs above please. Flickr: Please wait...

Re: Poll: Will you get a grip for your new OM-D E-M5?
I'm not sure about buying the E-M5 since it's only the first of the series, but when I buy one, I would definitely buy the grip.
When I shot with the OM-1N, it was fine with small lenses but a bit slippery with larger lenses, though the 2x 75-150mm I used was generally fine.
Considering that I normally use the ZD 50-200mm and it's much heavier than the OM-series lenses I used (and I haven't seen the M.ZD lenses I would want), I'd need the grip to be productive, 5 axis IS or not.

Does the ZD 50-200mm support CDAF on m4/3 bodies like the 14-54mm Mk II? Is yours the SWD version? Just wondering how fast/slow the AF is when adapted on newer generation m4/3 bodies with fast AF like EP3.

nope ZD50-200mm does not support CDAF. USed to have 50-200mm with MMF1 on PEN. Focussing take 2.5 to 3 sec to lock down AF. under dim light ie concert, it could take 4 sec and sometimes fail to AF. I read that the latest version of adapter MMF3, has done no improvement on AF speed.
certainly look forward hands on session if OSC can organise one. i really look forward what the output could be, with 16megapixel new sensor to pair with the SHG lens, 14-35mm f2.

Haha...this is fun way to grow old. First there is old bulky camera design then the trend went to as small as possible. Now we are back to the camera (OM1 which I desired in the 70s/80s); this went completely out of fashion and then now in again. Please keep your neck ties...skinny ones will be in style again oh... and the broad ones too....short hair/long hair. Manual lens was going for a song until people wanted them again...now up...soon down... it is like not growing old...(I mean growing old the fun way). I love this forum because it makes people stay relevant to time(s)....
Grip/no grip... If I want a grip for this then I might as well bring my Nikon out.....

No, it doesn't and mine is the original version I bought in 2004. I don't normally use auto focus so there isn't a problem for me.
The trouble with any of the micro Four-Thirds bodies (as I understand it) and auto focus is that they're slow with the Four-Thirds lenses of any type but better with the few that support CDAF like the 14-54mm mk II.

Voted no, because the purpose of me switching from DSLR to m4/3 (if it happens with the EM5) would be the smaller size and lighter weight.
